Giant NASA Balloon Mission to See Comet ISON Suffers Telescope Glitch

An ambitious one-day mission to observe the potentially dazzling Comet ISON with a telescope dangling from a colossal NASA balloon this weekend has failed due to a mechanical glitch, NASA officials say.

The mission, called the Balloon Rapid Response for ISON (BRRISON), lifted off from Fort Sumner, N.M., on Saturday (Sept. 28) in a bid to make telescope observations of Comet ISON ? which some scientists have dubbed as a potential "comet of the century" if brightens on its way into the inner solar system. The telescope-toting balloon aimed to observe the comet from the Earth's upper atmosphere in infrared and ultraviolet/visible wavelengths of light.

But roughly two and a half hours after the BRRISON balloon's launch, the 0.8-meter telescope on its science gondola platform returned to a stowed position too rapidly. That motion drove the telescope past an internal latch, causing it to jam, mission officials said. [Comet ISON In 2013: 8 Essential Facts]

"The telescope was unable to be redeployed despite numerous attempts by the BRRISON team from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, which built BRRISON for NASA," according to a NASA statement after the balloon returned to Earth.

The in-flight problem prevented the payload from collecting its much-anticipated photos of Comet ISON. An Interim Response Team was expected to assess the BRRISON payload during recovery operations on Sunday.

The BRRISON mission flew on a zero-pressure balloon and was billed as the first NASA Planetary Science Division balloon mission ever aimed at observing a comet. The project cost totaled $11 million, but while a scientific data loss, the gondola-carried payload is in the process of being recovered and should be available for reuse as much as possible on another mission.

The fast-paced BRRISON project was sponsored by NASA, The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and the Southwest Research Institute. It is one of several projects underway to study Comet ISON in detail during its swing through the inner solar system.

Comet ISON ? officially designated C/2012 S1 (ISON) ? was discovered in September 2012, by Russian amateur astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok. The comet's pass through the inner solar system has been a major source of anticipation and uncertainty among astronomers.

The comet is slated to make its closest approach to the sun on Nov. 28, when it will be about 700,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers) from the sun's surface. If Comet ISON survives the solar close encounter, the comet could flare up brilliantly to become a dazzling object in the night sky. But the comet could also fizzle out or break apart, scientists have warned.

Prior to Saturday's balloon ?liftoff BRRISON team member Eliot Young, a principal scientist at Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo. issued an upbeat message.

Young said the late-evening launch was "probably good news for our suite of experiments: it guarantees us night time observations." The winds at 120,000 feet had sped up towards the east, as happens in late September, he said, making flight times short before the payloads reach population centers and have to be terminated.

Young noted in his pre-launch message that the evening launch made BRRISON team members change their schedule of observations.

"We never expected to observe Comet ISON through sunrise," Young said. "Our sunshade was installed to protect the telescope during afternoon observations of ISON. With the unusual evening launch, we have had to re-orient our sunshade."

During its observing trek data gleaned by BRRISON mission was to be recorded onboard and analyzed after landing.

In addition to observing Comet ISON, scientists has hoped to have BRRISON observe several other targets during its flight, including views of the Comet Encke, some moons of Jupiter and the water-bearing asteroids 24 Themis and 130 Elektra.

Lake Charles pastor shot to death during church service

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -

A pastor was shot and killed during a church service on Friday night in Calcasieu Parish.

According to Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kim Myers, it happened around 8:20 p.m. at the Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center at 307 Deshotel Lane in Lake Charles.

Myers said Pastor Ronald J. Harris Sr. was shot "as he was preaching."

Woodrow Karey Jr., 53, of Lake Charles, is accused of walking into the church and shooting Harris.

Myers said Harris, of Lake Charles, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Myers said Karey shot Harris with a shotgun twice, once when he walked into the church and a second time when Harris fell to the floor. Myers said Karey walked up to him and shot him at close range.

Karey fled on foot, Myers said, but called the Sheriff's Office and surrendered without incident.

A Calcasieu Correctional Center booking report indicates his location of arrest was Opelousas Street/Deshotel Lane.

Myers said at the time of Karey's arrest, he directed deputies to two guns he had discarded in a wooded area close to the intersection where he was apprehended. Myers said one was a shotgun and the other was a .22 pistol, both of which were recovered.

Karey was booked on a second-degree murder charge. Judge David Ritchie set bond in the case at $1 million.

Myers said Karey has no known criminal history.

Authorities say the motive for the shooting is unknown and the investigation continues.

According to Calcasieu Parish Chief Deputy Stitch Guillory, there were 65 witnesses inside the church at the time of the shooting, including the victim's wife.

"At this point, we're just trying to piece together as much information as we can," said Guillory.?"And find out what the cause of this was."

Doctor determines Lamm unfit to testify in Yeshiva University sex abuse case

(JTA) ? Rabbi Norman Lamm, former chancellor of Yeshiva University, has been found unfit to testify in a $380 million sex abuse lawsuit against the school.

Neuropsychologist Elise Caccappolo of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center evaluated Lamm on Sept. 16 and found that he cannot provide reliable testimony, the New York Post reported, citing Lamm?s attorney Joel Cohen.

?Dr. Caccappolo found that a deposition was unlikely to pose a risk or threat to Dr. Lamm?s health. However, after administering a battery of tests conducted over a period of nearly five hours, Dr. Caccappolo determined [in her written report] that ?the pattern of Dr. Lamm?s cognitive impairment impedes his ability to independently comprehend and adequately respond to questions posed to him, as well to reliably retrieve and report past information,? Cohen wrote to U.S. District Court Judge John Koetl last week, the Post reported.

Koetl ruled earlier this month in New York City that the choice of doctor should be agreed upon by Yeshiva University and former students of Y.U. institutions who are suing the school.

The students allege they were sexually abused between 1976 and 2003, when Lamm was chancellor,?the Forward?and other media outlets reported.

Filed by 19 former students of the Yeshiva University High School for Boys in Manhattan, the suit names top members of Y.U.?s former administration, including Lamm.

In July in a letter announcing his retirement, Lamm, 85, acknowledged mishandling the abuse allegations decades earlier. He apologized for not alerting police when he learned of the abuse accusations. Lamm also indicated that he may be suffering from a decline in his mental acuity.

Lawyers for the students said they wanted to depose Lamm as soon as possible due to fears that his mental status could further deteriorate, according to The Forward, which first published details of the claims against two former Yeshiva University staff members late last year.

Obama, India's leader seek to reinvigorate ties

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh renewed their mutual pledge Friday to deepen the relationship between the U.S. and India, declaring a shared interest in reducing tensions in South Asia as the U.S. lightens its footprint in war-torn Afghanistan.

Calling each other indispensable partners, Obama and Singh said great strides had been made on economic cooperation and a civilian nuclear agreement. Left unsaid were prevalent concerns in both nations that progress on those areas has come too slowly as the U.S.-India relationship has stagnated in recent years.

"There is a natural convergence between the United States and India," Obama said.

But while the two nations both say they have much to gain from closer economic ties, security challenges in South Asia have created a sense of unease in the region that has overshadowed peaceful pursuits.

New Delhi is concerned the Taliban may fill the power vacuum left behind as the U.S. withdraws most of its combat troops from Afghanistan by 2014. Chief among India's concerns is the role that its neighboring rival, Pakistan, will play in influencing Afghanistan's future.

"We both have a shared interest in making sure that Afghanistan continues on its path to a peaceful democratic country," Obama said.

Singh said he told the president of the difficulties he faces, given that the "epicenter of terrors still remains focused in Pakistan." Obama praised his Indian counterpart for his "consistent interest in improving cooperation" between India and Pakistan, two nuclear-armed nations and bitter foes.

Singh and the Pakistan prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, have planned a highly anticipated sit-down while both are in the U.S., and Obama plans to meet with Sharif next month. Singh said he was looking forward to his meeting with Sharif, but added a note of caution.

"The expectations have to be toned down given the terror arm which is still active in our subcontinent," Singh said.

On the economic front, Obama and Singh held up clean energy, military trade and common efforts to reduce endemic poverty in India as continued opportunities for the world's two largest democracies to work in tandem.

"In all these areas, India needs the United States to be standing by our side," Singh said.

But a landmark agreement on civil nuclear technology forged between Singh and former President George W. Bush has failed to yield the immediate economic benefits some had hoped. There's been disappointment that military trade and economic reforms haven't progressed quickly enough either.

Casting a positive light on possibilities for the future, Obama said that in the last few days, the first commercial agreement has been reached between a U.S. company and India on civilian nuclear power. His comments appeared to allude to a pact with Westinghouse Electric Co. that could lead to the development of a nuclear power plant using the American company's technology.

Outside the White House, a group of Sikhs protested Singh's visit, insisting the Indian prime minister must be brought to justice for failing to protect Sikhs and to prosecute those responsible for killing them.

A frequent exchange of official visits has characterized the close relationship between the two countries. Singh visited Washington in 2009, and Obama traveled to India a year later. Vice President Joe Biden, who was to join the meeting later Friday, recently spent four days in India.

And at the White House Friday, first lady Michele Obama hosted the prime minister's wife, Gursharan Kaur, for tea.

"There's a bipartisan sense in Washington that India, being a large, growing Asian democracy, occupies potentially a very important role - not least because it stands next to China," said Daniel Markey, a former State Department official and South Asia expert at the Council on Foreign Relations. "It could be an Asia giant to counter some of China's influence in the world."

Michael Bisping suffers eye injury, replaced by Lyoto Machida in fight against Mark Munoz

Only months after undergoing surgery to repair a detached retina in his right eye, UFC middleweight contender Michael Bisping suffered another eye injury and was forced to withdraw from his Oct. 26 bout at UFC Fight Night in Manchester, England, against Mark Munoz.

The UFC announced that ex-light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, who will be making his middleweight debut, would replace Bisping in the fight. ESPN.com's Brett Okamoto first reported the news.

Bisping, 34, injured the right eye originally when he was inadvertently poked by Alan Belcher on April 27 in Newark, N.J., at UFC 159. He underwent surgery in June, and has done commentary for the UFC's broadcasts on Fox Sports 1, FX and Fuel while recovering.

It is unknown exactly how Bisping injured the eye this time and whether it will impact his career going forward. Attempts by Yahoo Sports to reach Bisping and his manager, Audie Attar, were unsuccessful.

UFC president Dana White told ESPN that the UFC would "get him the best treatment possible. Hopefully he'll be able to get through this thing."

The UFC's UK office released a statement from Bisping in which he said he hoped to return soon.

"I am devastated for everyone who bought tickets to see me fight Munoz," he said in the statement. "I am so sorry for the fans, I really am. I am disappointed for myself, too, but my first thoughts are with the fans who have made sacrifices to come and see me in Manchester.

"I can only apologize to them, and to the UFC. I have been training so hard for this fight, that I just cannot believe I will not step into the Octagon in Manchester. But I promise my fans I will be back real soon."

Machida is coming off a controversial loss to Phil Davis at UFC 162.

Concert Review and Photos: On Stage, In the Crowd, and In the ...

Like most North Texas Natives, it?s hard to impress me when it comes to vast stretches of commercial real estate. I was born in Dallas, grew up in Plano, and so I hardly flinch when I see a Starbucks across the street from a Starbucks. That?s just a cliche at this point. Still, even I was a little bit of shock when I paid my first visit to?FC Dallas Stadium, otherwise known as Toyota Stadium, for the first installment of Breakaway Music Festival Dallas last weekend. The dichotomy of the the silos that represent Frisco?s rural past sit in the shadow of an enormous, corporately underwritten soccer venue, just across from other arena-sized businesses and shopping centers, such as Main Event. Though that helps to offset the size of the stadium, it?s a little like being surrounded by imposingly branded giants. ?The Frisco version of Dallas? Lemon Bar seems out of place as you arrive, just down the street from good old Cotton Gin Road. I love the suburbs mainly for one reason: They aggressively despise subtleties.

Frisco has had other music festivals, such as Edgefest, but this was a first brave toe dip into Electronic Dance Music and Rap, along with the expected appearances of much more polite indie rock. The Dallas Observer had a shaded (thankfully) stage of local music, and FrontRow was a media sponsor.

Though the high is only in the eighties, standing in the sun all day can still be a challenge, as?we learned earlier in the summer. Oak Cliff?s?Lil Twist?is onstage and he?s claiming both the OC and Dallas. The crowd loves it, though you have to wonder if their main association with Oak Cliff is sneaking out when their parents are dining at Boulevardier. Lil Twist drops Justin Bieber?s name as he introduces a song, as the rapper was not only a collaborator with the pop star but also a member of Bieber?s inner circle. The crowd is affectionately known as the?Lil Buddies, though that appears to have gone sour,?according to TMZ. I had a serious discussion with an editor recently, regarding both the dynamics and the nomenclature of this powerful entertainment clique. ?Is it Lil Buddies or?Little?Buddies?,? I asked.

It seems that every song Lil Twist introduces is his new single. That isn?t exactly a dumb business model. He tells the crowd that his new track, ?I Don?t Care,? features ?my big homie, Chris Brown.? He then introduces another new single, this one featuring Juicy J, who is getting ready to perform next in the lineup. The record is called, ?U.F.O.,? and is produced by both Lil Wayne and the aforementioned Bieber. If Bieber doesn?t work out, it seems that Lil Twist still has plenty of buddies from which to choose.

The action around the stadium was as often as good as what took place onstage. I had a hard time tearing myself away from the riotous goings-on at Winstar?s River Club. That would be the attemptedly posh bar located inside the venue, but within earshot of the acts, and with multiple displays of the performances outside. As the main bar serving the thousands of young fans, attitudes between server and the served began to wilt a little out in the sun. With lines over thirty deep on each side of the bar, and with only two people actually serving drinks, many impatient attendees would walk out, often with much fanfare. To put it simply: This crowd was rude. The bartenders did the best they could under the circumstances. Customers zeroed out tips in their faces defiantly.

At one point I could hear the opening of Three 6 Mafia?s now-classic ?Stay Fly,? and in continuing with my newfound love of hits, I start squirming in place, desperately craning my neck in order to hear better. But what was unfolding at the bar was too much to ignore. A patron slapped his hand down on the drink menu like a late game show buzzer and threw it aggressively toward the bartender before stomping out and cursing. The bartender, a short woman with a thick Northeastern accent, was having none of it. She lifted herself over the bar with both hands, attempting to get a better look at the offending customer.

?I will beat his skinny ass if he walks in here again,? she said.

She went on to offer some perspective about what the wait for a beverage meant in the grand scheme of things. ?It?s not the end of the world if you wait ten minutes for a drink. You give me an attitude, I don?t give a sh*t.? I don?t know how well-received her words were to the endless sea of men and women who looked like they could easily be casted as attractive extras in a film about surfing, though Frisco has nary a beach in sight. She was fantastic. My double finally arrives and I pay twenty-four dollars for the privilege, though I admit to being a heavy tipper. While I?m sitting at a table alone, a woman walks by with a cellophane-wrapped item and sticks it in my face. ?Would you like a bracelet to represent our sparkling white wine?,? she asks.

After finally being freed from the line, I take a tour of the stadium as Juicy J yells out several observations about Dallas:

?THERE?S A LOT OF P*SSY IN DALLAS,? he says to an enthusiastic response. (Well, yes, J, after all if the United States Census Bureau?s 2012 population estimate is accurate, then of the 2,453,843 residents of Dallas County, 50.5% of them are female. That means there are 1,239,190 women in Dallas.)

?THERE?S A LOT OF WEED IN DALLAS,? J continues. (That seems to be the case, J, however, according to this report by Drug Science.org, Dallas County ranked behind both Harris County and Bexar County in number of ?marijuana possession arrests? for 2009. We only had a measly 4,398.)

?THERE?S A LOT OF COCAINE IN DALLAS.? (Okay, Juicy J, you got me there. I won?t argue with that.)

He tells the crowd that ?Miley Cyrus is the best twerker in the world,? and they don?t enjoy that nearly as much. He then performs ?She Dancin,? which boasts an unforgettable chorus that simply paraphrases what many a disapproving grump has said about popular culture, from critics of Josephine Baker to Elvis.

Juicy J then offers a much more altruistic sentiment. ?I?m giving away a $50,000 scholarship,? he says. Next up, of course, is a song called ?Scholarship.? The specifics behind said scholarship revolve around a twerk contest, and decades from now this might be seen as a breaking point in America?s crisis of rising tuition costs. All personal discomfort with these issues aside, few people can write a chorus as sticky as Juicy J. ?Bandz a Make Her Dance? is the first time that day that everyone appeared to settle into the Colosseum-like backdrop.

Food choices left a bit to be desired, and there were no ins-and-outs, thus shutting one off from Frisco?s oasis of chain restaurants and faintly authentic Irish pubs. ?How can they feed these rich kids Cici?s Pizza?,? I opined as I walked past a momentarily-shuttered food option. ?I agree,? said a smiling woman, ?randomly appearing out of the pop-up village of vendors. She handed me a Kind ?healthy snack? bar, which was made of nuts held together with honey. I devoured it, squinting in the sun for signs of an actual meal.

Upstairs in the local music area, Denton?s Yeahdef did an admirable job of entertaining a crowd wandering the grounds, as professionally as is now expected from the no-format DJ after several years of practice. Oil Boom had what sounded to be like exactly one song for each genre of straight-ahead rock that?s been well-received in the past 30 years, and they embellished that point by touring through a medley of classic AM radio riffs during sound-check. They never seemed to repeat themselves as they opened with a very direct, quick-tempo song, featuring an almost Novoselic-like bassline, followed by a bluesier number*, and then an upbeat pop song. I wondered to myself if it was really Novoselic?s bass playing, or if was it was actually the Wipers who had inspired Oil Boom, in the same way that iconic bassist had either ripped off or paid tribute to that particular group before him. The influence is now so lost in pop?s DNA that it hardly matters, but it?s worth remembering where some of these moves originated.

Explosions in the Sky provided a break from the excitement with their usual set of instrumental music that I find to be emotionally manipulative, like a lover squeezing out one more crocodile tear to win a fight. They sound like the backing band for a legendary emo singer who never existed, but I know they hold a special place in the heart of anyone who has ever watched Friday Night Lights. Considering some of the behavior I witnessed in the upstairs lounge, I was impressed with the Breakaway crowd?s ability to pay attention during this set, even in the quietest sections of music. Perhaps more experimental acts will get a shot at playing the soccer stadium someday. When Wu-Tang clan took the stage, they did so minus a few members, either from business obligations, or in the case of the irreplaceable Ol? Dirty Bastard, a tragically premature death. Just as GZA has done in live sets, they remembered one of their most important founding members with a cover of ?Shimmy Shimmy Ya.? Explosions in the Sky attempted to play my heart strings, but this one actually hurt.

All previous kidding aside, I?m a little hesitant to knock Frisco too hard. I am reminded of journalist Hank Stuever?s experience of receiving some unfriendly emails after his exhaustive, holiday-themed cultural study on the town was released, 2009?s Tinsel. In the end, Stuever left Frisco with a positive opinion, which he?declared in this very publication. ?I was a fan at the time, and went to see him speak at the now-defunct Legacy Books in Plano to do a reading. He ultimately?described?his thorough examination the town as being about the ?cultural and economic need for myth. Joy and heartbreak.? After Saturday?s visit, he might be glad to know those needs and myths both are very much alive and well.

Procter & Gamble to be sole promoter of Gillette India

?

The world?s largest household products maker, Procter & Gamble (P&G), will soon be the sole promoter of shaving-products maker Gillette India, with the Saroj Poddar-led Poddar Heritage group (Poddars), the domestic promoters, set to relinquish control for a severance package.

The Poddars, the founding partners of Gillette India who currently hold a 12.86 per cent stake in the company, valued at around Rs 950 crore, will yield control after payment of an undisclosed sum from P&G.

The deal, which has got market regulator Sebi?s approval, is part of an agreement to raise public shareholding in Gillette India to 25 per cent, a level that had recently been made mandatory for all listed companies.

After the deadline to meet the public shareholding norm lapsed, Sebi had put a freeze on voting rights on partial promoter holding and imposed restrictions on corporate benefits like dividends. It might lift these curbs when the promoter holding in Gillette India falls to 75 per cent. Since P&G owns a 75.9 per cent stake, the promoter holding in the firms currently stands at 88.76 per cent.

SHAVING IT OFF
  • Promoter holding in Gillette India to be brought down from 88.76% to 75%
  • P&G to sell 0.99%; Poddar to sell 6% through OFS
  • Poddar?s remaining 6.86% stake to be classified as public shareholding
  • P&G?s stake to be 75%, the maximum a promoter can own
  • Poddars to give up control; to get a severance package from P&G
  • S K Poddar and son to give up directorship
  • Entities to fulfil conditions laid down by Sebi

?The company and its promoters are working through the sequence of events needed to deliver compliance and will inform stock exchanges of the plans when the calendar is finalised,? Gillette India said in a statement.

According to market rumours, the Poddars and P&G were earlier not on the same page over paring promoter holding to 75 per cent.

Also, Gillette India?s earlier proposal, which included an inter-se transfer between Poddars and P&G at a premium of 25 per cent to market price, was turned down by Sebi and the decision upheld by the Securities Appellate Tribunal.

As part of the new agreement, the Poddars and P&G would sell six per cent and 0.99 per cent, respectively, through a public offer. Poddars? remaining stake would be treated as non-promoter shareholding, subject to fulfilment of Sebi?s conditions, including one on giving up all key management positions and right to appoint a director.

S K Poddar, currently the chairman of Gillette India, and his son, Akshay Poddar, a director on the company?s board, will step down from the board. Further, Poddars will give up their statutory and contractual rights in Gillette and the shareholder agreement will cease to exist.

6 arrests in vandalism of ex-NFL player's NY home

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? Six people were arrested Thursday on charges they were among hundreds of young partygoers who trashed a former NFL player's vacation home, and police said more arrests were expected.

The arrests came after former New England Patriots and Los Angeles Raiders offensive lineman Brian Holloway said he signed papers authorizing the Rensselaer County sheriff to bring charges in the Labor Day weekend party, which was attended by up to 400 teenagers.

Holloway said that among those charged was a young man he had taken into his family for a time as a homeless teen, who's accused of organizing and promoting the party. He said investigators have told him the number of people charged could end up in the hundreds as they work through the sheer volume of participants.

"Everyone that broke the law, I'm pressing charges against," Holloway said. "The parents had a chance and students had a chance to come forward, and only four did."

Holloway, who played offensive tackle for the Patriots and Raiders in the 1980s, gained national attention by reposting party pictures the teens had put on social media websites. He said he posted them on the website helpmesave300.com in an effort to get the teens to come forward, take responsibility for their actions and change their behavior.

Instead, he said, some parents were angry about his website and there was even a threatened lawsuit.

"I tried to be as accommodating as I could, but they took their stand by not showing up," Holloway said.

The partiers caused at least $20,000 in damage to his rural vacation home near the Massachusetts border in Stephentown, including broken windows and holes in the wall, he said.

Police said a ringleader of the party was 19-year-old Seth Hawk, the young man Holloway said he had taken into his family a few years ago. Hawk, of Grafton, faces felony charges of burglary and criminal mischief and misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a child and unlawfully dealing with a child. He's accused of advertising the party and providing alcohol.

Three of the other arrested people face felony charges including burglary and larceny, and two are charged with misdemeanors, including trespassing. They range in age from 17 to 21.

A phone number wasn't available for Hawk, and authorities said they didn't know the names of the arrested people's lawyers.

Holloway said Hawk was a classmate of his son and had a troubled youth but found stability living as part of his family when he was about 15. He said hearing about Hawk's involvement "was a shocker."

"We're still pulling for him," he said. "This may be the thing to get him on track."

A Starbucks coffee shop in Fountain Valley, California, on Aug. 22, 2013. The company has filed to trademark the name "Fizzio" as it tests a line of carbonated drinks

Starbucks has filed a trademark application for the term "Fizzio" as it continues its test of carbonated drinks.?

The Seattle-based coffee company says in the filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that the name would be for beverage-making machines, as well as a variety of drinks, including soft drinks.?

Zack Hutson, a spokesman for Starbucks, said Wednesday that the filing is related to the company's test of sodas in Atlanta and Austin, which started in June. Starbucks has been testing three flavors at the locations ? Lemon Ale, Original Ginger Ale and Spiced Root Beer. It is also giving customers the option to carbonate other drinks, such as iced tea and iced coffee, at no extra charge.?

"So far the response from customers in the test markets has been positive," Hutson said.?

The soda tests mark the latest move by Starbucks to expand beyond coffee. The company is also looking to move into the fast-growing premium juice category with its Evolution Fresh juices. It also recently acquired a chain of tea shops called Teavana, saying tea represents a big growth opportunity.?

Starbucks has more than 19,000 locations around the world, with about 12,000 of them in the U.S.?

Police must release Newtown shooting 911 tapes, Connecticut panel says

Julio Cortez / AP

A gunman killed 20 children and six others at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., before shooting himself.

By Becky Bratu, Staff Writer, NBC News

The Newtown Police Department must release 911 tapes from the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the Connecticut Freedom of Information Commission ruled Wednesday.?

Investigators had refused to release the Dec. 14 recordings under a new state law that prohibits the release of certain?documents pertinent to an ongoing investigation?-- a decision The Associated Press challenged.

According to NBC Connecticut station WVIT, the hearing officer noted the new law, adopted in response to the massacre, does not shield 911 calls.

But the prosecutor leading the investigation argued that certain 911 content could be protected, WVIT reported.

The tapes could reveal valuable information about the law enforcement response to the horrific shooting, in which 26 people, including 20 first-graders, lost their lives.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, killed himself as police arrived. He also had killed his mother before going to the school.

Investigators plan to appeal the decision, WVIT reported, so it's unlikely that the recording will be released anytime soon.?

How to change location of SkyDrive folder in Windows 8.1

We have seen that, with Windows 8.1, SkyDrive has been?deeply integrated with it. The SkyDrive team has been regularly adding features, as its receives its users? feedback. While the SkyDrive users have welcomed its integration with Windows,?one of their most common?complaints was that they could not change the location of the SkyDrive folder.

Now a days? we see many PCs with boot drive being a Sold State Drive (SSD) where space is a premium as these SSDs haven?t yet become as economical as regular Hard drives. By default files in the SkyDrive folder are stored at the C:\Users\<username>\SkyDrive.? And with SkyDrive data being stored there, it was a cause of concern because of lack of storage space. Earlier with SkyDrive desktop app, you had the option to configure where SkyDrive Synced its files, but with integration of SkyDrive in Windows 8.1, it became a concern, because of the absence. It thus became the most requested feature by SkyDrive users.

In Windows 8.1 Preview, users had been trying out various tweaks, registry hacks to achieve the same. But in Windows 8.1 RTM, you can do it easily. This post is a small tip about the same, though small but many of the Windows 8.1 users don?t know about this, kind of hidden yet useful feature.

You don?t get this feature from SkyDrive options in the new PC Settings. For this you have to open Windows Explorer in desktop.

Screenshot 65 How to change location of SkyDrive folder in Windows 8.1

Right click on SkyDrive in the navigation pane and select Properties and in that you have the ?Location? tab.

SDLocation How to change location of SkyDrive folder in Windows 8.1

Here you can change the default path. You can change where the files in this folder are to be stored, to another location on the same hard drive, other drive or even another computer on the network. Just click on the Move.. button and select the new location of your choice and Apply. The contents in the SkyDrive folder will get stored in the specified location.

SDLoc How to change location of SkyDrive folder in Windows 8.1

You also have the option to Restore Default back to its default path. Please note all the screenshots above are from Windows 8.1 RTM and the feature is available in Windows 8.1 RTM only.

This is a big space saver for those users having smaller SSD as their Boot drive. Apart from this shifting of location to save space on boot drive, there?s another unique space saver SkyDrive feature that doesn?t sync all your contents to your PC, unless you ask SkyDrive to do so. We have seen this feature in our earlier post. Though it looks like entire SkyDrive folder is downloaded, but actually its just the ?placeholder? of those files. It thus?consumes very little space compared with the actual files. You can just check this, by right-clicking on SkyDrive in Explorer in Desktop and check for General tab in Properties for the size.

SDSize How to change location of SkyDrive folder in Windows 8.1As you can see, though the size is 137 MB, but size on disk is 9.2 MB, though all the files, folders are listed.

So try these nice SkyDrive features and as?a matter of precaution, do take backups before experimenting.
