China's first female astronaut and two other crew members emerged smiling from a capsule that returned safely to Earth on Friday from a 13-day mission to an orbiting module that is a prototype for a future space station.

The?Shenzhou?9?parachuted to a landing on the grasslands of the country's sprawling Inner Mongolia region at about 10 a.m. (0200 GMT). China declared the first manned mission to the Tiangong 1 module ? the space program's longest and most challenging yet ? a major stride ahead for the country's ambitious space program.
About an hour later, mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, emerged from the capsule, followed by crew mates Liu Wang, 43, and 33-year-old Liu Yang, China's first female astronaut.
The three, all experienced air force pilots, were lifted on to folding chairs and appeared in good health. They smiled, waved, chatted and saluted as state television ran live footage from the landing site.
"Tiangong 1, our home in space, was comfortable and pleasant. We're very proud of our nation," Liu Yang told national broadcaster CCTV.
Space program commander, Gen. Chang Wanchuan, declared the astronauts in good health and declared the mission "completely successful."
He was followed by Premier Wen Jiabao, who said the mission marked "absolutely important progress" for the space program.
The mission had included both remote control and piloted dockings with the module and extensive medical monitoring of the astronauts as part of preparations for manning a permanent space station.
China's next goals include another manned mission to the module originally scheduled for later this year but which may be delayed depending on an evaluation of the?Shenzhou?9?mission and the condition of the Tiangong 1. China has been extremely cautious and methodical in its manned missions, with more than three years passing since the previous one, and all four have been relatively problem-free.
Chen Shanguang, director for the Chinese Astronaut Research and Training Center, told a news conference that preparations and selection of astronauts were already under way for the?Shenzhou?10 mission.
Tiangong 1 is due to be retired in a few years and replaced with a permanent space station around 2020 that will weigh about 60 tons, slightly smaller than NASA's Skylab of the 1970s and about one-sixth the size of the 16-nation International Space Station that China was barred from participating in, largely on objections from the United States. Possible future missions could include sending a rover to the moon, possibly followed by a manned lunar mission. Launched June 16 from the Jiuquan center on the edge of the Gobi desert in northern China,?Shenzhou?9?is the latest success for China's manned space program that launched its first astronaut, Yang Liwei, into space in 2003, making China just the third nation after Russia and the U.S. to achieve that feat. China would also be the third country after the United States and Russia to send independently maintained space stations into orbit.
Earlier in the week, a spokeswoman said China spent 20 billion yuan ($3.1 billion) on its space program between 1992 and 2005 ? a rare admission for a program with close links to the secretive military. By the time the next?Shenzhou?mission is completed, Beijing will have spent an additional 19 billion yuan ($3 billion), the spokeswoman said.
Wang Zhaoyao, director of China's manned space program office, said the program mirrors the rising global status of China.
"For any country, for any people, a space program is indispensable," Wang said.

Goldman Sachs recently conducted a consumer survey of over 1,000 respondents, in an effort to better understand the costs that customers face when they switch platforms.
The survey found that 21 percent of respondents said no discount, regardless of the amount, would make it worthwhile to leave Apple's platform. Among those who said they would consider switching, more than half of those said they would need a discount greater than 30 percent.
Among those polled, 71 percent said they are "highly likely" to choose an Apple device for their next tablet or smartphone purchase. Another 23 percent are "likely" to stick with Apple's ecosystem, while only 1 percent were "unlikely" to stick with Apple.
Switching costs for customers only grow when they own more than one device in the Apple ecosystem, and the new iCloud service adds yet another layer to the switching costs, Shope said. Among those polled by Goldman Sachs, 30 percent said they are paying for extra storage capacity or iTunes Match with iCloud.
"Considering that apple has disclosed that it has 120 million iCloud users as of its earnings release on April 24, this is quickly becoming yet another high-margin revenue stream for the company," Shope said. "More important, however, this also suggests that a large portion of Apple's installed base is adding yet another source of explicit switching costs."

Three of Hawaii's rarest birds have been detected at lower elevations along the volcanic summits for the first time in 30 years, a sign the endangered species may be holding their own against introduced diseases and climate change, scientists say.
Avian malaria and pox virus, two introduced mosquito-borne pathogens, limit the habitat of many susceptible Hawaiian birds to areas above the range of mosquitoes. Scientists are concerned warming conditions could allow mosquitoes to expand their range, thus hitting birds even harder and driving more of the endangered birds to extinction.
Scientists with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Geological Survey rediscovered the birds as part of a project looking at the potential impact of climate change on bird diseases.
All of the rediscovered species, which live in the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the big island of Hawaii, are thought to be vulnerable to mosquito-transmitted diseases, limiting their distribution to the cooler, higher elevations of the refuge where mosquitoes are less likely to thrive. Observations of the birds show they've significantly expanded their known range.

Scientists heard the songs of the Hawaii Creeper and Hawaii 'Akepa at 4,200 feet (1,280 meters) above sea level, very near where they were last seen in the 1970s. One endangered 'Akiapola'au was also seen at the same elevation, 1,000 feet (305 m) lower than detected 30 years ago.
Scientists don't know what's allowed the birds to survive at lower elevations than expected, although they are currently conducting research to find out.
"Hawaii's native birds face multiple threats from habitat destruction, invasive species, introduced diseases and climate change, with many already having been driven to extinction," said U.S. Geological Survey Director Marcia McNutt in a statement. "The observation of three endangered species possibly expanding their range in a wildlife refuge gives us hope that with some care, the road to extinction need not be a one-way street."

Apple has just released a new standalone app dubbed simply "Podcasts," which is available for iOS devices running version 5.1 or later. It expectedly offers a variety of ways to browse and discover podcasts among the thousands available (including a new Top Stations feature that groups select podcasts by category), as well as the ability to either stream episodes or download them for offline use. The app is also optimized for the iPad in addition to the iPhone, and it's thankfully able to sync podcasts with iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC (just be sure to upgrade to iTunes 10.6.3 first). No charge for this one, either.

The biggest thing I took away from the sermon (hopefully this was one of the big points!!) is that courage is the strength to obey God even if I am afraid and even when it is hard.? Is persisting in taking care of my family and going to treatments obeying?? I like to think it is.? I'm here for a reason, and since I am still here, God wants me here.? Wouldn't it be really lame of me to turn tail and run away from treatments or my responsibilities??

There are tons of verses about courage in the Bible, which leads me to believe that I'm not alone in how I feel.? It's comforting to me that I'm not alone in this struggle.? I'm not the only person who every day asks for help and faith and trust.? I'm not the only one who needs encouragement to not lose heart.? Don't you think that's amazing??

Michael Maroun is one of few selected worldwide to attend 62nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting
RIVERSIDE, Calif. Michael Maroun, a physics graduate student at the University of California, Riverside, is one of only 580 young researchers from 69 countries who will spend six days next month with more than 25 Nobel laureates at the 62ndLindau Nobel Laureate Meeting.
Dedicated this year to physics, the meeting will take place July 1-6 in Lindau, Germany. The annual meetings, which attract thousands of applications from around the world, are known internationally for providing a forum for the transfer of knowledge between generations of scientists.
Maroun will interact with the Nobel laureates in panel discussions, seminars and during the various events of the social program. In this way, he will get to exchange ideas, discuss projects and network with the laureates.
"This is a terrific honor and it speaks to the quality of Michael's research and hard work," said Joseph Childers, the dean of the Graduate Division at UC Riverside. "It also underscores how highly valued he is by his mentors at UCR. We feel extremely fortunate to have such an outstanding student represent UCR at this year's Lindau gathering!"
Maroun's field of research is mathematical physics, a field so specialized that even mathematical physicists, Maroun explained, have yet to agree upon a definition for the field.
"I hope the Lindau meeting will make mathematical physics more popular than it is now and give it the international attention it deserves," said Maroun, whose advisor is Michel Lapidus, a professor of mathematics and a cooperating faculty member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. "A variety of interesting problems are tackled by mathematical physicists. A typical question addressed is how we can go beyond our current model of particle physics so that gravity currently missing from the model is also included."
Originally from Boston, Mass., Maroun joined UCR in 2006 and is working toward a doctoral degree in physics. He is the recipient of a Graduate Division Fellowship and a Physics Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award at UCR; and a GAANN Fellowship at the University of Florida at Gainesville, where in 2002 Maroun received his master's degree in physics.
His interest in mathematics and physics began early in life specifically during dinners at home when his parents, both electrical engineers, would discuss their work. For his twelfth birthday, Maroun's father gifted him a compilation of physics essays that included contributions from prominent physicists like Einstein, and encouraged him to read only the text if the equations proved too challenging. The exercise paid off. When later Maroun took college courses in physics and mathematics, the material was familiar and came very easily to him.
"Michael is not only a very bright student, but he is a very original individual, with a mind completely of his own, who has the intellectual strength and depth to go off the beaten paths and the courage to straddle two different fields, such as theoretical physics and mathematics, as well as more recently, economics," Lapidus said. "He is applying his intellectual gifts to study deep problems at the border of mathematics and physics. He has already come up with some very interesting ideas and even written a highly original article in mathematical/physical economics."
Lapidus added that Maroun is an invaluable member of his research group who helps many other Ph.D. students in the group understand physical problems and find appropriate mathematical techniques to solve them.
At the Lindau meeting, Maroun is most eager to meet with Nobel laureates David Gross and Martinus Veltman, whose research comes closest to what interests him.
The first person at UCR to attend a Lindau meeting in physics, Maroun leaves for the meeting on June 27, stopping first in Washington DC, a requirement for all U.S. attendees. He will return to UCR on Aug. 12 after exploring research opportunities with colleagues in Europe.
"Being selected to attend Lindau is very exciting and a huge honor for me," Maroun said. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, given that it won't be for several years that the meeting will focus again on physics."
Held since 1951, the Lindau meetings focus each year on chemistry, physiology/medicine or physics.
The U.S. National Science Foundation, which received thousands of applications for attendance at the 62nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting from young physicists like Maroun in the country, is sponsoring his attendance.
"To apply, we had to summarize our research in 200 words or less," Maroun said. "That, interestingly, was the most difficult part of the application process!"

The 70-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton, discovered in Mongolia, will soon be returned by the US to its home country.?

U.S. authorities said on Wednesday they expect this week to seize a 70-million-year-old?dinosaur?skeleton that was discovered in?Mongolia?more 65 years ago and now is stored in New York and at the center of an international legal dispute.
A federal judge in New York has signed a warrant that allows the?U.S. Department of Homeland Security?to seize the skeleton of the Tyrannosaurus bataar - an Asian cousin of the North American Tyrannosaurus rex - from?Dallas-based Heritage Auctions.
"We should have it by the end of the week," said Luis Martinez, a spokesman for U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The seizure will be a "major step forward" for the government of?Mongolia, which is claiming sovereign ownership and seeking the skeleton's return, said?Robert Painter, a?Houston?attorney who represents Mongolian President Elbegdorj Tsakhia.
The skeleton - 8 feet (2.4m) tall and 24 feet (7.3m) long - has been stored in crates in New York City since Heritage sold it at auction to an unidentified buyer for more than $1 million on May 20.

Not only does Hamilton enjoy history, she says it is her calling.
Hamilton said she became frustrated after seeing so many students who were not interested in their own history.
?Everyone has a history, and everyone should know his or her history,? Hamilton said.
She said her frustration was what led her to write her first book.
?I said, ?If it?s going to happen, I have to get it done,?? Hamilton said. ?No one can make your dream come true but you.?
The title of Hamilton?s book clearly expresses the frustrations she experienced ? ?Black History: Someone Forgot To Teach The Children.?
Hamilton will discuss some of the many struggles faced by African-Americans throughout history in her book. She also includes a challenge for all, reflections, words of wisdom and even a story about President Obama in which Hamilton writes her theory about one of the reasons he decided to run for office.
The first chapter of the book is dedicated to the story of the African-American History Monument in Columbia.
Hamilton writes, ?Ironically, the State of South Carolina has the first and only monument that recognizes the contributions of African Americans on the grounds of a State Capital in the United States of America.?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A new Disney princess has ascended to the box-office throne with a No. 1 debut for Pixar Animation's "Brave."
The latest from the makers of "WALL-E," ''Finding Nemo" and the "Toy Story" movies opened with $66.7 million domestically, according to studio estimates Sunday. "Brave" added $13.5 million in 10 overseas markets for a worldwide start of $80.2 million.
Featuring a feisty Scottish princess, "Brave" was the first of Disney's Pixar animations with a female protagonist. And it left American hero Abraham Lincoln in the dust.
The 20th Century Fox action tale "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" opened far back at No. 3 with $16.5 million, behind "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted."
DreamWorks Animation's animated "Madagascar" sequel had been No. 1 for two weekends and added $20.2 million to raise its domestic total to $157.6 million.
"Brave" is the 13th-straight Pixar release to open at No. 1 since "Toy Story" launched Hollywood's age of computer animation in 1995.
"Their track record is just unbelievable," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "The Pixar brand just carries so much weight with the audience, it doesn't matter almost what the story is about if it has the Pixar name."
The weekend's other new wide release, Steve Carell and Keira Knightley's apocalyptic romance "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," misfired with just $3.8 million, debuting at No. 10.
The Focus Features film, playing in much narrower release than other top-10 movies, stars Carell and Knightley as heartbroken neighbors on a road trip as a killer asteroid hurtles toward Earth.
Woody Allen's Italian romance "To Rome with Love" pulled in huge audiences in limited release, debuting with $379,371 in five theaters. That gave the Sony Pictures Classics release a whopping average of $75,874 a theater, compared to $16,028 in 4,164 cinemas for "Brave."
"Brave" features a voice cast led by Kelly Macdonald and Emma Thompson in a mother-daughter story of a young Scottish princess defying tradition that requires her to marry against her will.
The film proved that audiences will turn up for a female hero, not just the male protagonists of past Pixar flicks, such as Woody and Buzz of "Toy Story," the robot of "WALL-E" or the rat and his chef buddy of "Ratatouille."
"Brave" matched the $66.1 million debut of Pixar's "Cars 2," with male automotive lead Lightning McQueen, over the same weekend a year ago.
"It is a phenomenal thing, these guys and their mastery of big storytelling and character development, delivering something that plays well to adults as well as kids, to girls as well as boys," Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution, said of Pixar.
The audience for "Brave" did lean toward females, who accounted for 57 percent of viewers. Two-thirds of the film's business came from families, who also continued to flock to "Madagascar 3," making a rare weekend when two PG-rated movies led the box office.
The R-rated "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" was a clever idea ? the 16th U.S. president waging his own civil war against the blood-suckers of the republic. But critics were unimpressed, and action fans had only a passing interest in the movie, which featured relative unknown Benjamin Walker as Lincoln.
Still, it was made for $69 million, a modest budget for a summer action movie, and 20th Century Fox had hopes it would hold up well over the next week or so before "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Dark Knight Rises" swoop in to take over cinemas in July.
"It's actually a good start for this movie," said Chris Aronson, the studio's head of distribution. "This is an interesting and untested genre that I think audiences are going to continue to seek out. Mash-ups have been done, but the historical mash-up has not been done."
Estimated ticket sales were for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Another member of the Big Island Sports Hall of Fame dies
Walter ?Satch? Pakele, who made his?pitch with Big Island teams in the Amateur Softball Association and later coached at the UH Hilo died earlier this month after a bout with cancer.? He was 65.
Pakele had a reputation of being one of the greatest men?s fastball pitchers in Hawaii.
Pakele pitched for the Kalakoas Softball Club in 1977 and hurled 64 complete games en route to 54 victories to lead his team to four tournament championships as well as a Parks and Recreation title.
Pakele was inducted into the Big Island Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.??
He also pitched for Puueo Poi and the Hilo Fil-Americans.
Pakele went on to assist Calen Perreira at Hilo High, which was his alma mater, and then followed Perreira to UHH where h became the Vulcan pitching coach.
Pakele joins Honomu Rocket legend Martin Esteban Jr., who also died of cancer on Jan 3, 2012.? Esteban was also a member of the Big Island Sports Hall of Fame.

The BISHF was founded by the late Jack Matsui.

Greeks were hoping against hope that their national soccer team would triumph over mighty Germany in the Euro 2012 championship, restoring lost pride to the debt-stricken country by getting one over its economic paymaster.
Friday night's quarterfinal fixture, in the Polish port of Gdansk, pits two nations against each other whose ties have rarely been so sour, so bristling.
Greece fans are seeking respect for their country after its humiliating economic collapse and Germany?s predominant role in lending bailout money ? along with strict austerity measures.?
"It's not good that sports and politics are together, but today we have no other choice," said Greece fan Michalis Kalotrapesis, wearing a white national team shirt and training top. "We are playing for our country and for our image in Europe and all over the world."?

Germany will be cheered on at the game by Chancellor Angela Merkel, a hated figure in Greece, who for many personifies the painful bailout conditions and the euro zone's strict approach to the debt-strapped state.
Merkel loves football and loves the German team. Earlier in the tournament, she went to visit their training base. She attends high-profile matches and was once photographed with bare-chested midfielder Mesut Ozil in the changing room.
'Bye-bye Greeks' A crunch meeting between Merkel and other European leaders in Rome on Friday was moved up to an earlier start time so that she could attend the game.
"Bye-bye Greeks, we can't rescue you today!" Germany's top-selling Bild proclaimed on its front page on Friday in the colors of the Greek flag.

Even the respected Greek daily Kathimerini drummed home to Greeks that this match is against a foe popularly blamed for saddling Greece with a punitive austerity program, chronic unemployment and years of deep economic recession.
"Whoever thinks today's match is just a game is wrong," the paper wrote, vowing it was "politics (maybe even war) by other means."
"To many Greeks, victory will represent the triumph of the weak against the wealth, might and arrogance of the powerful -- the victim would humble his executioner? If the Germans win, they'll see it as confirmation of their diligence, strategy, talent and thrift," it added.
Some German car manufacturers, like Volkswagen and Daimler, are making special arrangements that will allow their workforce on shift to watch the match.
Greece has never beaten Germany Officials from Volkswagen told NBC News that employees will be able to leave early on Friday, but that workers will have to make up for the free time at a later point.
Greece have never beaten Germany but now would be the ideal time to do so in order to cheer up the public back home and give them hope that Greece can repeat their amazing run to the European Championship crown in 2004.
The chances are slim to say the least. The Germans, among the favorites to take the tournament title, go into the match on the back of 14 consecutive competitive victories stretching back to the 2010 World Cup.
