Romney turns to Ohio amid series of distractions

POWELL, Ohio (AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney declared Saturday that "women need our help" as he promised to promote women-led businesses should he defeat President Barack Obama in November's election.

The appeal came as the former Massachusetts governor tried to shrug off a series of unwanted distractions before the Republican convention opens Monday in Florida.

"Just a word to the women entrepreneurs out there, if we become president and vice president, we want to speak to you, we want to help you," Romney said with running mate Paul Ryan at his side during an outdoor rally that drew an estimated 5,000 people to the Columbus area. "Women in this country are more likely to start businesses than men. Women need our help."

While the comments were focused on women entrepreneurs, the promise comes as Romney tries to close Obama's perceived advantage among female voters. Women's issues have played a prominent role in the presidential contest. Republicans faced difficult questions this week about the party's position on abortion after a Missouri Senate candidate suggested that women's bodies can prevent pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape."

Both parties hope to use their conventions to appeal to female voters. The Republican convention, in particular, will feature high-profile women such as former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez. Planners also shifted the speaking slot for Romney's wife, Ann, to ensure network television coverage of her speech.

Romney's comments about wanting to help businesswoman came less than 24 hours after he raised the discredited rumor that Obama wasn't born in the United States. The remark, and Romney's efforts to explain it, overshadowed his economic message as he campaigned near his Michigan birthplace on Friday.

Romney did not repeat the remark on Saturday, but instead assailed the Democratic incumbent for failing to deliver on his campaign promises.

"I can almost read his speech now. It'll be filled with promises and tell people how wonderful things are," Romney said of the speech Obama will give at the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina next month. "It is not his words people have to listen to. It's his action and his record. And if they look at that, they'll take him out of the office and put people into the office who'll actually get America going again."

At the same time, Obama used his weekend radio and Internet address and a new TV ad to highlight Romney's plans for the Medicare health program for seniors.

Obama doesn't mention his Republican challenger in the radio address but says the Medicare program is about keeping promises to millions of seniors who have put in a lifetime of hard work.

His new 30-second TV ad says Romney "would break that promise" and replace the current Medicare system with a voucher program that wouldn't keep up with costs.

"Insurance companies could just keep raising rates," says the new ad, which was airing in Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia.

Romney spokesman Ryan Williams called the ad "another false attack from a desperate president." Williams said Romney is the one who would reverse billions of dollars in cuts to Medicare by Obama and protect the program for current beneficiaries and future retirees.

Romney's Ohio rally was expected to be his final public appearance before the Republican National Convention opens Monday in Tampa, Fla., where the former Massachusetts governor will formally accept the presidential nomination.

While GOP officials suggest the momentum is on their side heading into the crucial period, Romney and his party have faced tough questions in recent weeks on Medicare and abortion.

Now his joking reference to the president's birth certificate links him to the so-called birther movement and a wing of his party ? a combined 25 percent in an April Pew Research Center poll ? that says it either isn't sure or doesn't believe Obama was born in the U.S.

Romney caused another stir earlier in the week by declaring that big business was "doing fine" in the current economy in part because companies get advantages from offshore tax havens.

Still, polls suggest the presidential contest is essentially a tossup as Obama struggles under the weight of a weak economy.

The president's re-election campaign has pushed voter attention away from the economy in recent weeks, particularly after Romney introduced Ryan as his running mate. Ryan is the author of a controversial budget plan that would transform Medicare into a voucher-like system for future retirees.

Outside the Ohio rally, protesters heckled the presumptive GOP ticket about its plans for seniors' health care.

Speaking before Romney, Ryan said one in six Americans lives in poverty. He said the country is done being fooled by Obama's promises to change Washington.

Democrats also have seized on Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin's comment about "legitimate rape."

The congressman announced Friday that he would not leave the Senate contest despite overwhelming pressure from Romney and top Republican officials.

Romney made the birth certificate remark at a large outdoor rally in Michigan, where he grew up and where his father, George, served as governor. He told supporters that he and his wife, Ann, had been born at nearby hospitals.

"No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised," Romney said.

The crowd of more than 7,000 responded with hearty laughter.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt swiftly denounced the remark, saying Romney "embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them."

Romney later denied that the remark was directed at the president.

"No, no, not a swipe," Romney told CBS News. "I've said throughout the campaign and before, there's no question about where he was born. He was born in the U.S. This was fun about us and coming home. And humor, you know ? we've got to have a little humor in a campaign."

The authenticity of Obama's birth certificate has been questioned by Republican critics who insist he is not a "natural-born citizen" as required by the Constitution. Obama released a long-form version of his birth certificate last year as proof that he was born in Hawaii in 1961.

But conservative questions have lingered. And Romney has declined to condemn such questions, particularly from prominent donor Donald Trump.

The Obama campaign released a web video Friday night featuring Romney's remark and declaring that "America doesn't need a birther-in-chief." Democrats intend to keep the pressure on as the Republican convention gets under way.

Obama was spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, as Republicans began arriving in Tampa for their convention. But Democrats were planning to counter Romney's message throughout the week.

Reaching out to young voters, a key component of his 2008 election, Obama scheduled stops Tuesday and Wednesday in the college towns of Ames, Iowa; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Charlottesville, Va.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled plans to appear in Tampa on Monday because of Tropical Storm Isaac, but was scheduled to be in Orlando and St. Augustine, Fla., on Tuesday.

After Ryan gives his convention address on Wednesday night, first lady Michelle Obama is set to appear on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman."

The high-profile events are paired with a number of smaller gatherings around the country by Democrats aiming to attract female voters and a bus tour with party activists in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Obama campaign deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said the president's team was "not going to cede four days of this campaign just because of a party convention."

YPF, Chevron executives move toward strategic accord on Argentine shale oil and gas

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Argentina's state-controlled oil company was holding an important meeting with California-based Chevron Corp. today to share strategies for developing the world's third-largest unconventional oil and gas reserves.

YPF CEO Miguel Galuccio is calling his talks with Chevron's Latin America chief Ali Moshiri the first step toward a strategic alliance with Chevron, Latin America's leading private energy investor. He says YPF needs partners with Chevron's power and experience to develop Argentina's shale reserves, which trail only the U.S. and China in potential.

Friday's encounter between the two executives did not lead to any specific investment news, but sets the stage for Galuccio's formal presentation next Thursday of a five-year plan for the company Argentina expropriated from Spain's Grupo Repsol.

Buy Tickets On Bands' Facebook Pages With Tikly

When buying tickets for a concert, festival or event, do you compare the listed ticket prices on various sites?

The online ticket-buying space is slowly getting more contenders. Ticketmaster, a company that dates back to the 1970s, was dominant in the online ticketing space for awhile. Then other sites such as Ticketfly (founded in 2008), Eventbrite (2006) and StubHub (2000) came on the scene touting platforms integrated with social media. Some denounced the high fees of other ticketing services, essentially changing the game for online ticket sales.

Tikly is a new ticketing service that's fully integrated with Facebook. Artists, venues and events can sell directly from their Facebook page -- without fans being re-directed to another site. The ticketing service is currently in beta, with 300 clients already using it. Tikly also offers low add-on fees to tickets so that bands feel good about the prices their fans are paying to see them. Fans can buy tickets for shows in advance -- without the costly fees that some sites tack on.

Emma Peterson, the 23-year-old founder and CEO of Tikly, said she created the site because she noticed the "ticket industry itself was kind of upside down." And not just from a consumer standpoint, she tells Mashable, but "the ticketing industry works against the organizers."

Peterson is also a tour manager for the band The Nadas. She saw how other ticketing sites charged fans up to 50% of the ticket price in fees, which could lower ticket sales for the band, too. Fans would be dissuaded from buying tickets in advance for smaller venue performances when they could buy tickets at the door without any fees.

She founded Tikly 2011 with business partner Brian Hemesath. The two are part of a startup incubator program in Des Moines, Iowa.

Peterson said they envisioned features for a true live music lover. Tikly's ticket buying experience, she says, aims to be as close to buying a tangible ticket as possible. Tikly provides each ticket a name , description and images, so it's not just a button to click on an app when you check in. Eventually, they want to make the ticketing experience on the site even more interactive with streaming MP3s and the chance to buy band merchandise. Peterson says venues could eventually pre-sell drink tickets so events are even more seamless for consumers.

The Nadas are one of the artists using Tikly in beta. Just visit their Facebook page, click on Tikly and then select the number of tickets you want to purchase and buy them through Facebook.

For bands, Tikly?s format is simple. A set fee is added to each ticket at the check-out, depending on ticket price:

• Tickets under $10 have a $1 per ticket fee
• Tickets $10 to $75 have a 10% per ticket fee
• Tickets over $75 have a flat $7.50 per ticket fee

Tikly is fully integrated with Dwolla, a mobile payment system with a flat fee of $0.25 for anything over $10.

But other ticketing services offer low fees, and tried-and-tested platforms.

Eventbrite tells Mashable that their fees are never more than $9.95 for ticket-buyers. It charges 2.5% of the ticket price plus $0.99 per ticket, capping out at nearly $10 max, even for the priciest tickets. For event organizers posting events on Eventbrite, there is no set-up fee and no fee period for free events.

Ticketfly CMO Gannon Hall tells Mashable, "For organizers, Ticketfly?s fees are variable and depend on the cost of each ticket. It?s a revenue share between the promoter (or sometimes the artist) and Ticketfly, but there is no set percentage fee. There are no flat surcharges and/or set up fees (unlike other platforms).?

From a ticket buyer?s perspective, Ticketfly?s service fees typically range 30 percent lower than those of Ticketmaster, says a spokesperson.

StubHub, like its parent company eBay, manages the marketplace, so buyers and sellers never interact. It's completely free for fans to list tickets for sale, and StubHub does not buy, own or price any tickets, a spokesperson tells Mashable in an email message. But buyers pay StubHub 10% of the ticket price and sellers net 85% of the ticket price.

Grupo Radio Centro Announces Successful Consummation of Transaction with Emmis Communications for KXOS-FM Radio Station

MEXICO CITY, Aug. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Grupo Radio Centro, S.A.B. de C.V. ("GRC") (NYSE: RC, BMV: RCENTRO-A), announced today that the KXOS-FM radio station assets have been acquired by a newly-formed entity, 93.9 Holdings, Inc., pursuant to the Put and Call Agreement entered into with Emmis Communications Corporation and certain of its subsidiaries (collectively, "Emmis") in April 2009, which was amended in April of this year to reduce the purchase price to US$85.5 million.

The acquiring entity, 93.9 Holdings, Inc., is controlled by 93.9 Investment, LLC, which is wholly owned by certain members of the Aguirre family who are U.S. citizens. GRC's wholly-owned subsidiary, Grupo Radio Centro LA, LLC ("GRC-LA"), owns a 25% equity stake in 93.9 Holdings, Inc., and GRC-LA and 93.9 Investment, LLC have entered into a shareholders' agreement relating to their interests in 93.9 Holdings, Inc. Pursuant to this shareholders' agreement, GRC-LA will have certain customary minority shareholder rights, including those relating to extraordinary corporate transactions, and has a call option to acquire, subject to compliance with the rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission, the equity in 93.9 Holdings, Inc. held by 93.9 Investment, LLC, at a purchase price based on the amount of capital contributed by 93.9 Investment, LLC to 93.9 Holdings, Inc.

In order to finance the acquisition, 93.9 Holdings, Inc. entered into a US$90 million senior secured credit facility guaranteed by GRC and certain of its operating subsidiaries with a group of lenders for which Credit Suisse Securities (USA) LLC acted as the lead arranger. The credit facility provides for a term loan in two tranches, one of which has a five-year term and the other of which has a seven-year term. The principal amounts borrowed under the credit facility are required to be repaid in accordance with a graduated amortization schedule that requires 93.9 Holdings, Inc. to start repaying, on a quarterly basis, the amounts borrowed under the five-year tranche in six months and the amounts borrowed under the seven-year tranche in 18 months. In addition to being guaranteed by GRC and certain of its operating subsidiaries, the credit facility is secured by a first priority lien on substantially all of 93.9 Holdings, Inc.'s and its subsidiary's assets and substantially all of GRC's property, including its corporate headquarters. The guarantee agreement entered into by GRC and certain of its subsidiaries requires GRC to maintain certain financial ratios, and comply with other financial conditions that, among other things, limit its ability to incur additional indebtedness, pay dividends, pledge assets and enter into transactions with affiliates.

As a result of this acquisition, the Local Programming and Marketing Agreement ("LMA") for the KXOS-FM radio station entered into between GRC-LA and Emmis on April 3, 2009 has been terminated. GRC-LA and 93.9 Holdings, Inc. have entered into a new LMA effective as of the date hereof pursuant to which GRC-LA will continue to provide programming to, and sell advertising time, on KXOS-FM on substantially the same terms and conditions as the LMA that had been entered into with Emmis, except that the fees payable by GRC-LA will be equal, in any period, to the debt service requirements of 93.9 Holdings, Inc. for such period under the credit facility described above. GRC-LA will also be required to reimburse 93.9 Holdings, Inc. for any expenses incurred by it with respect to the KXOS-FM radio station.

Most small craft brewers distribute their beer on draft only, because bottling is expensive and the off-premise is difficult to crack. Frequently, those draft sales are made in growlers?64-ounce containers that are filled at breweries and taken away. But now the growler is being embraced by mainstream retailers, including grocery stores, c-stores, gas stations and drug stores.

Sunoco launched its Craft Beer Exchange Program in July 2011, dispensing beer in growlers at over 40 of its gas stations in the Buffalo, New York market in partnership with A-Plus convenience stores. Each location offers nine to 12 taps and includes brews from Allagash, Dogfish Head and Victory Brewing, along with larger craft brewers like New Belgium Brewing Co. Sunoco has since expanded the program to offer growler fills at 17 locations in Charleston, South Carolina. Sunoco, which operates over 600 gas stations and c-stores nationwide, is considering the program in other states.

The growler phenomenon is generating buzz in other retail channels. At the Filling Station Beer Store in Chelsea Market in New York City, Stephanie Hirsch has been selling 16- and 64-ounce growlers for two years. ?We have a small, open-air space,? Hirsch says. ?People can also take a seat and drink the beer here.? The Filling Station has six taps and sells growler containers for $2 (pints) and $5 (half-gallon jugs). Prices on larger growler fills range from $11-$15, with a 10% discount for refills. Craft beers include local brews from Kelso, Captain Lawrence and Brooklyn Brewery.

In beer-savvy Seattle, Chuck?s 85th Street market is a hot spot for beer to go. The small grocery store carries over 1,000 beers and maintains 30 taps. ?We started as a market with a great beer selection and added taps last July,? says owner Chuck Shin. ?Now we?ve become a neighborhood pub.?

At New York City?s Grand Central Terminal, Justin Philips opened the Beer Table Pantry in August 2011?a tiny (150-square-foot) store selling bottled beer and filling 64-ounce growlers from six taps. ?My customers are mostly regular commuters, as well as tourists,? says Philips, who also owns the Beer Table restaurant in New York. He pours only beer from small brewers and stocks 80-100 bottled brands. ?I have only a grocery license, so you can?t drink beer here,? he adds. Some U.S. drugstores are also selling draft beer. New York-based Duane Reade (purchased by Walgreens in 2009) now has Brew York City Growler Bars in two stores?one in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan. All growler fills cost $7.99 and include beers from craft breweries such as Bear Republic,?Dogfish Head, Green Flash and Shmaltz Brewing.

In most states where growler sales are now permitted, beer laws had to be amended. (Florida still bans it, permitting breweries and pubs to sell draft beer only in quart or gallon sizes.) Washington state only legalized it last July. In Arizona, a new law permitting growler fills went into effect on August 2. The Arizona Department of Liquor License and Control, on behalf of Walgreens, asked for the wording to be added to a broad legislative liquor bill. At this point, Walgreens hasn?t indicated whether it plans any growler sales points in the state.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen spoke to the lower house of parliament in a nationally televised speech Thursday that was mandatory viewing for civil servants.

Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said he believed it was Hun Sen's longest speech in 27 years as prime minister.

Hun Sen, 61, spoke without taking breaks ? or questions ? mostly on sensitive border disputes with Vietnam. He blamed France, the former colonial ruler of both countries, for not clearly demarcating the border.

Politicians often use the border issue to stir nationalism and garner support, and Hun Sen is seeking re-election in 2013.

His speech was far from the lengthiest among world leaders. Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro frequently made five-hour speeches outdoors in the hot Caribbean sun in his heyday.

And Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez spoke for nine hours in his state-of-the-nation speech in January.

On Constitution Hill, next to Queen Elizabeth II's gardens behind Buckinham Palace, they have hung a banner using her Tibetan name: "You go, girl, Choeyang Kyi! The first ever Tibetan Olympian!!! We Tibetans are with you."

Tibetan fans say they're torn between their pride for her as a Tibetan and their discomfort that she's running in Chinese colors.

"I have really, really mixed feelings about today. I'm cheering her because she is Tibetan," says Dhundup, who like many Tibetans uses only one name. He was born in Tibet but fled when he was a boy.

China invaded Tibet in 1959 amid an aborted uprising, and the Tibetan spiritual leader, The Dalai Lama, fled with thousands of his followers across the Himalayas and into India, creating an exile community that now numbers 150,000 people around the world.

South Korea has been told to bar a football player from collecting his bronze medal on Saturday.

Midfielder Jongwoo Park carried his national flag with a slogan supporting South Korean sovereignty of islets at the center of a territorial dispute with Japan during the third-place match against Japan on Friday.

The incident came just hours after South Korean President Lee Myung-bak raised diplomatic tensions by traveling to the islets.

In a statement, the International Olympic Committee requested the South Koreans take "swift action on this issue" and that "the athlete not be present" at Saturday's ceremony. They also said they had asked for an explanation.

Spokesmen for the South Korea Olympic body could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Olympic Charter prohibits political statements by athletes and players.

FAKE MUSTACHES

After Mexico's 2-1 victory in the football final, many of the yellow-clad Brazilians filed out somberly, leaving a sea of people in green, many wearing silly fake mustaches and oversized hats.

"It's representative of our country," said Jose Maria Rosales, 31, who flew in from Hermosillo, Mexico, to see the match.

Sitting nearby ? also in mustache and sombrero ? was Richard Webster, 32, who didn't have to travel so far. He's from London, and he has never even been to Mexico. "I was supporting team GB until they were knocked out," he says. "Then I went down to the fancy dress shop and got myself these."

NEXT UP: PARALYMPICS

The white concession tents stand there in Olympic Park, but they are closed. People walk up to the gate, but they are turned away.

"I'm confused," says tennis coach Mirco Hampeo, 35, as he looks at a map.

He's not the only one.

Many people have ended up at Eton Manor, the only permanent Paralympics structure in the park, which seats 10,500 and will host the wheelchair tennis competition. It's not on the Olympics maps but you just can't miss it.

Some 4,200 athletes will take part in the Paralympics Games from Aug. 29 to Sept 9.

NEYMAR IN DISBELIEF

Brazilian star Neymar is sitting in the middle of the Wembley Stadium pitch with his hands on his knees and staring in disbelief. The latest in a long line of Brazilian soccer virtuosos looks like he can't believe his heavily favored team just lost to Mexico in the gold medal men's soccer game.

Neymar was bottled up for most of the game, unable to use his famously quick feet to get free of Mexico's determined defense.

He just missed a goal in the 48th minute, firing a rocket from about 30 yards out that just went over the crossbar. He also sailed one high over the goal in the 59th, dropping to his knees after mishitting a perfect crossing pass.

The Mexicans surrounded him with two defenders for most of the game and even bloodied his nose in the second half when goalkeeper Jose Corona hit Neymar with an elbow while chasing a loose ball.

In the end, Neymar goes home from the Olympics like every Brazilian star before him ? without a gold medal.

MEXICO JUBILANT

The Olympic men's soccer final is over, Mexico has won the gold medal 2-1 over Brazil and its supporters are celebrating in the stands at Wembley Stadium.

Fans threw sombreros in the air and waved Mexican flags at the final whistle, while the players, some already shirtless, danced at midfield. Oribe Peralta, who scored both goals for Mexico, got ahold of a straw sombrero and passed it around among his teammates.

The dejected Brazilians watched, some sitting on the grass, exhausted.

Mexico midfielder Jorge Enriquez left his celebrating teammates to come over and shake hands with the Brazilian players.

It's Mexico ? unexpectedly.

Oribe Peralta scored twice to lead Mexico to its first Olympic gold medal in men's soccer, stunning favored Brazil 2-1 on Saturday.

Peralta scored 29 seconds into the game, the fastest goal since FIFA started keeping track of Olympic records in 1976, then headed a free kick from Marco Fabian past Brazilian goalkeeper Gabriel in the 75th minute to put the game away.

It was another devastating defeat for Brazil, which is now 0-3 in Olympic gold medal games.

FASTEST GOAL

Mexico's early goal against Brazil in the men's gold medal soccer match has been officially recognized as the fastest in the competition since records began in 1976.

FIFA, soccer's world governing body, says it still doesn't know if it's the fastest goal ever in the Olympics because it hasn't kept track of all tournaments.

The fastest goal ever in a senior soccer competition was scored by Turkey's Hakan Sukur ? 11 seconds into a match in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

Brazil's Fabinho was even quicker in the 2007 under-17 World Cup in South Korea, netting after just nine seconds.

BUT IS HE A MARVEL?

These London Games have a lot of snazzy names out there, from Usain Bolt to Lolo Jones. But the winner for the best name out there has to be Brazilian forward Hulk. Just Hulk. With a name like that, who needs a nickname?

He is a reserve on the Brazilian team. But coach Mano Menezes inserted him in the 32nd minute of the gold medal game on Saturday after watching his team look lethargic in falling behind Mexico 1-0.

Hulk's presence was felt almost immediately, when he, yes, smashed a left-footed shot from about 20 yards out that Jose Corona had to lunge to save. That seemed to wake the Brazilians up, and they turned up the offensive pressure on Mexico for the rest of the half.

Just don't make Hulk angry, Mexico. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

A MURAL FOR GABBY

Gabby Douglas is really big in her hometown. Really big and painted on a wall.

The gold-medal-winning gymnast has a giant mural painted in her honor in Virginia Beach, Va. And she loves it.

"WOW!!! This is amazing!! (hashtag)so honored," Douglas tweeted Friday from the Olympics in London, where the 16-year-old gymnast won two gold medals at the Summer Games.

The mural shows Douglas holding a gold medal with an American flag backdrop. It says "Way to go Gabby."

Media outlets report brothers Todd and Eric Lindbergh spent four days painting the 9-by-30 foot mural on the outside wall of a sports bar. Todd Lindbergh says he found out that Douglas was from Virginia Beach, and the idea behind the mural came the moment he saw her on television at a medals ceremony.
