A false report that a mass euthanasia of dogs and cats was planned at the Chester County (S.C.) Animal Shelter brought pet-lovers from three states to the facility Monday.
Officials said the report, largely spread through Facebook and other social media sites, was erroneous. But they say interest in the animals led to about 30 dogs being adopted.
"It kept us plenty busy," Chester County Sheriff's Capt. Mary Anne Tolbert, the shelter supervisor, said Tuesday morning. "The phone is still ringing this morning."
The report apparently began spreading over the weekend, mostly on Facebook. Several people posted messages and sent emails, saying a mass killing of dogs and cats at the shelter was planned, either for Monday or Tuesday. Some of the messages made it to Support Chester County Animal Shelter, a Facebook page organized by pet-lovers who try to find homes for dogs and cats at the shelter.
Officials with the group wrote on Facebook that the rumors were false, but that didn't stop animal-lovers from arriving at the Chester County shelter Monday.
Tolbert said about 30 dogs were adopted Monday. Animal rescue groups came from South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee to help. The shelter's phone remained busy Tuesday morning.
Tolbert said the shelter was overcrowded, with about 100 dogs and cats at the facility over the weekend. Capacity is 65, she said.
She said the attention has helped dozens of pets find homes, and she said the shelter "has plenty of loving dogs and cats" still looking for homes.
The Chester County Shelter is at 2714 Dawson Drive, in Chester. Shelter hours are 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 to 4:30 p.m. weekdays, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
