Recent sparring between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney over taxes and who has been outsourcing American jobs prompted a local businessman and Henderson County Republican Party member to speak out Friday.

N.C. Rep. Chuck McGrady and N.C. Republican Party Vice Chairman Wayne King joined Henderson County Republican Party Vice Chairman Andrew Riddle at a news conference to discuss the issue, saying Obama has hurt the country by sending stimulus money overseas. They said the nation needs a leader who can create jobs in North Carolina and the country.

"It's important we get this right," King said. "We can't get this wrong again, because unemployment is so high in North Carolina."

King endorsed Romney and said the former governor of Massachusetts is well qualified to create jobs.

"Romney has created jobs in the private sector; Obama has not," King said. "It is important, in my opinion, to have a businessperson to lead this country."

Riddle Construction needs someone in office who carries the qualification to keep his business operating, King said. The company has been in business for more than 30 years, and the once-thriving workplace that employed 24 workers in 2007 is down to three people, said Riddle, the company's vice president.

"We have dropped 75 percent in revenues this year, but we are hanging on because we are fiscally responsible as a company," he said Friday at the news conference.

It's frustrating to see billions of dollars in stimulus money go overseas, Riddle said, adding that "it's tough to run a small business in the United States right now."

He said the solution to the economy is a leader with fiscal responsibility.

McGrady said he disagrees with how Obama is running his re-election campaign because it's not focused on jobs in America. Recently, Obama's ads have accused Romney of outsourcing jobs, and McGrady said that is a distraction from the real issue ? the economy.

"My plea is that President Obama needs to take control of his campaign and move to the issues that are important to the folks here in Henderson County and Western North Carolina," McGrady said.
