How Too Much Communication Killed a Relationship

Communication that hurts relationships | BIGG SuccessHe had always been proud to call her his bride. But now things were different. She was different.

He knew it hadn?t happened overnight. But it seemed like it did. He began to notice it with little things.

He would ask a question. She wouldn?t respond.

He cracked a joke. She didn?t laugh.

They would go out for dinner. He talked about his day. She seemed bored.

He asked her about her day. She didn?t have much to say.

Her mind always seemed to be somewhere else. And then he started to understand the source of the problem.

She had begun seeking solace from another. An outsider had intruded into their relationship.

This outsider was a force to be reckoned with. It was evident in the changes he could see in her.

They had always said that nothing could ever come between them. Now this one was.

It all seemed so innocent?at first. She had introduced him to this outsider. He was glad that she had this source of support. He could see how happy she was playing with this one.

But now she was smitten. Almost all of her attention was reserved for this ?thing?. He couldn?t think of ?it? as human but she sure did.

?How much time does she need to spend communicating with it?? he wondered. ?Why is she so fascinated??

This thing was ever present. Every day. In the evening. Even on the weekends. She always had time for it.

?Maybe I?m the third party,? he thought, feeling sorry for himself. No, he was just coming to terms with reality.

She made him feel less important than that thing she had fallen in love with. He felt alone.

At times, he was angry. On other occasions, he felt hurt, dejected, rejected.

But little did he know, it was about to get worse for him. One night, he had to work late.

He got home, stopped and looked at the mail, and then wandered over to the refrigerator. She had told him she would have a plate for him to heat up.

He opened the door and looked in. No plate.

He looked around. Maybe plans had changed. Had she left a note.

No note anywhere. No nothing.

He walked toward their bedroom. He didn?t know that his world was about to fall apart.

As he gazed through the open door, she was asleep in bed. But she wasn?t alone.

She was snuggled up with the thing ? her smartphone!

Do you sleep with your smartphone?

How do you get a picky young eater who refuses everything to like fruits and vegetables? How do you get children to try nutritious foods when all they want is something sweet or salty? How do you raise healthy eaters without constant mealtime struggles?

In her new book, "'Eat Your Vegetables' and Other Mistakes Parents Make: Redefining How to Raise Healthy Eaters" (Healthy Learning, May 2012), registered dietitian Dr. Natalie Digate Muth, a pediatric resident at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA and mother of two, provides parents with a step-by-step plan to help kids embrace fruits, vegetables and other healthful foods without battles, bribes and coercion.

The strategies, tailored to a child's age and development level, are based on scientifically proven research and are accompanied by real-life anecdotes and expert advice.

"As parents, we all struggle with how to get our children to actually want to eat a healthy, balanced diet," Muth said. "As a formerly obese child, a mother of a once-picky eater and a pediatrician acutely aware of the epidemics of obesity and inactivity in our children, I am highly motivated to help children and parents work together free of mealtime battles to adopt healthy eating and activity habits."

The book helps parents assure healthful nutrition for kids of all ages. And while some of the strategies might be surprising, they work, Muth said. Parents will not only learn what exactly constitutes a healthy eating plan at various ages and stages, but they'll also discover tips and tricks to get kids to actually want to eat healthy. Among the topics:

  • Learning the (reverse) psychology of getting kids to eat healthy.
  • Why the "clean plate club" contributes to childhood and adult obesity.
  • How using food as a reward causes more long-term damage than short-term parental sanity.
  • How subtle marketing and packaging tactics are designed to sabotage healthy eating habits.
  • Learning effective strategies to get the young "couch potato" up and moving.

Each chapter is followed by simple, kid-friendly recipes developed by Dr. Mary Saph Tanaka, a pediatric resident at UCLA and a talented amateur chef, which help parents turn the information contained within the chapters into action starting with the next meal or snack.

"'Eat Your Vegetables'" is a pediatrician- and mom-tested guide to help parents and caregivers raise healthy food eaters for life," said Dr. Tanya Altmann, a pediatrician, mother and book author. "With many of today's children being raised on fast-food nutrition and couch-potato fitness, Dr. Muth gives parents direction in this step-by-step guide for shaping a child's psyche to help them embrace and enjoy fruits and vegetables."

Egypt crowd attacks candidate's office

CAIRO (AP) ? Security officials and witnesses say several hundred people have ransacked the campaign headquarters of an Egyptian presidential candidate who was ousted President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.

The crowd attacked Ahmed Shafiq's Cairo office, smashing windows, tossing out campaign signs and tearing up posters. Then they set fire to the building. No one was hurt.

The attack comes just hours after the country's election commission announced Monday that Shafiq would face the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, Mohammed Morsi, in a June 16-17 runoff for the presidency.

Shafiq is opposed by the revolutionaries who helped toppled Mubarak last year, while many also fear the Brotherhood's religious rhetoric.

Protests also erupted in downtown Cairo and the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CAIRO (AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood is scrambling to broaden its appeal to liberals, leftists and Christians after official results Monday showed that the Islamist group's candidate will face ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister in next month's runoff for president of Egypt.

To get the support it needs, the Brotherhood must tone down its religious rhetoric and offer far-reaching concessions, such as protecting the right to protest and strike, election-watchers said.

The Brotherhood's candidate, Mohammed Morsi, will go head-to-head against Ahmed Shafiq, a former air force commander, in the June 16-17 runoff. They were the top vote-getters in last week's first round of voting.

None of the 13 candidates had been expected to get the more than 50 percent of the vote needed to win outright. Still, Morsi's top finish was a surprisingly strong showing, because he was widely viewed as a weak candidate and because the Brotherhood's popularity has eroded recently because of a series of missteps.

Announcing the final results, election commission chief Farouq Sultan said that Morsi won close to 5.8 million votes, or almost 25 percent, while Shafiq garnered 5.5 million votes, or nearly 24 percent. Finishing third was leftist candidate Hamdeen Sabahi with 4.8 million votes, or about 21 percent.

Several hundred Sabahi supporters gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, birthplace of last year's uprising, chanting slogans against the military, Morsi and Shafiq. Similar numbers gathered in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, where some of the protesters tore down a large Shafiq poster.

Turnout among the country's 50 million registered voters was more than 46 percent, Sultan said.

Shafiq is widely viewed as an extension of the Mubarak regime, and the Morsi-Shafiq runoff is the most polarizing contest possible. In many ways, it mirrors the conflict between Mubarak, himself a career air force officer like Shafiq, and the Islamists he jailed and tortured throughout his years in power.

For Morsi to win, said Khaled Abdel-Hameed, one of the leaders of last year's 18-day uprising against Mubarak, he must make concrete concessions on specific issues.

"A protest boycott of the election is an option," said Abdel-Hameed. "If not, we want Morsi to adopt a package of legislation guaranteeing freedoms, labor union activity and the right to strike and protest."

The U.S.-educated Morsi appears willing to broaden his appeal but has offered few specifics.

He has vowed to be a "president for all Egyptians" ? a nod to minority Christians who voted overwhelmingly for Shafiq. He has pledged to work to realize the goals of the revolution, a promise designed to appease the pro-democracy youth groups behind the uprising that toppled Mubarak. And he has pledged a national unity government.

"We are certain that the remnants of Mubarak's regime and his gang, and those that belong to it that are trying to bring back the former regime will fall flat and will land in the garbage bin of history," he said.

Morsi's success, said Middle East expert Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Institution in Doha, Qatar, depends on how explicit and concrete the Brotherhood promises will be and whether the group can reassure significant segments of the population that view it as opportunist and hungry for power.

Pro-democracy activists say that the Brotherhood did not join their 2011 anti-Mubarak uprising until it became clear it had irreversible momentum and that it later abandoned them during their protests against military rule so as not to lose the goodwill of the generals who took over from Mubarak.

But the alternative ? Shafiq ? will be hard for them to accept.

"Leftists and liberals can hold their noses and vote for Morsi," Hamid said. "The Muslim Brotherhood is moving to the center and not everyone who did not vote for Morsi in the first round was actually voting against him."

The Brotherhood was empowered by the ouster of Mubarak 15 months ago, emerging as the nation's most dominant political force after spending the best part of nearly 60 years as an illegal, underground organization. It went on to win just under half of all seats in Parliament.

But it has failed to translate its dominance in the legislature into real political power, partly because the generals wield near-absolute authority, and also because of the perceived poor performance of its lawmakers.

Its credibility took a hit when it reversed an earlier decision not to field a candidate in the presidential election. Later, it attempted to pack a 100-member panel assigned to draft the constitution with its own lawmakers and other Islamists.

Khalail el-Anani, an expert on Islamic groups from Britain's Durham University, said the Brotherhood needs to change its thinking and cast aside the "persecuted" approach left over from years in the political wilderness.

"They don't realize that things have changed around them," he said. "In order for him to win, Morsi must reinvent himself as a nonpartisan politician."

The Redskins lost $36 million over two years, and the Cowboys lost $10 million for overloading contracts during the uncapped 2010 season despite league warnings about such maneuvering.

Also, the NFL is making thigh and knee pads mandatory equipment for the 2013 season, a move the players' union was not pleased with since it had no input in the decision.?

Atlanta Falcons president and competition committee chairman Rich McKay said at the owners meeting today that the league can make the decision unilaterally because it is a playing rule. However, a statement from the NFLPA said any change in working conditions is a collectively bargained issue.

Browns linebacker Scott Fujita says he didn't take part in the Saints bounty program when he was with New Orleans. In his first public comments since the bounty scandal broke, Fujita says he intent on clearing his name and protecting his image. Fujita was handed a three-game suspension by the NFL for his alleged involvement in the pay-for-hits scheme.

And Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson is the latest former player to sue the National Football League and seek compensation for head injuries. Dickerson is the lead plaintiff among 15 men named in the suit filed Monday in federal court in Houston.?

More than 1,000 former NFL players are suing the league, saying not enough was done to inform them about concussion dangers and not enough is done to take care of them today. The league has said any allegation it intentionally misled players is meritless.

Captains of Industry

The study?s authors focus on presenting the facts about military management styles, and stop short of drawing out the implications of their analysis. Yet their findings do raise some troubling possibilities about what it might take to keep rogue executives in check. Indoctrinating future business leaders to always follow the rules may ensure that laws don?t get broken but also prevent them from looking beyond the way things have always been done. And if creativity requires a bit of a roguish streak, it could mean that the occasional scam might be necessary collateral damage in an innovation-driven economy. After all, innovation and creativity can sometimes be hard to distinguish from the financial illusions created by persuasive conmen. Before Enron?s great unraveling, it was revered as a model of the future of the energy business and the subject of a glowing Harvard Business School case study now airbrushed from history. And great ideas sometimes require taking a leap of faith: When eBay?s first president, Jeff Skoll, explained the business model to one of his Stanford professors, the professor was certain Skoll would be looking for another job in a few months, as eBay was one of the stupidest business ideas he?d ever heard.

Space station grabs 'Dragon by the tail'

For the first time in history, a commercial spaceship has journeyed to the International Space Station, carrying vital supplies to the astronauts. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

By Alan Boyle

The International Space Station's crew reached out today with a robotic arm to grab SpaceX's Dragon cargo capsule and brought it in for the orbital outpost's first-ever hookup with a commercial spaceship.

It marks the station's first linkup with a U.S.-made spacecraft since last year's retirement of NASA's space shuttle fleet, and potentially opens the way for dozens of commercial cargo shipments. If the long-range plan unfolds as NASA hopes, U.S. astronauts could be shuttled back and forth on the Dragon or similar spacecraft within just a few years.

"Today, this really is the beginning of a new era in commercial spaceflight," said Alan Lindenmoyer, manager of NASA's commercial crew and cargo program.?

The hookup comes after Tuesday's successful launch of the Dragon atop a Falcon 9 rocket, and represents the culmination of years of planning and hundreds of millions of dollars of spending by NASA and California-based?SpaceX, known more formally as Space Exploration Technologies Corp. The company was founded a decade ago by dot-com billionaire Elon Musk, with aspirations of eventually sending humans to settle on Mars.

Musk said the technologies that were tested today will blaze a trail for those more ambitious trips to come. "This is a crucial step, and having achieved this step, it?makes the things in the future and the ultimate path toward humanity becoming a multiplanet species much, much more likely," he told reporters after the hookup. "The chances of that happening just went up dramatically, so people should be really excited about that."

But first things first: Today's operation marked the first full in-space test of the robotic Dragon spacecraft's procedure for approaching the station, and for that reason, every step along the way was carefully planned out and checked over the course of several hours.?The first steps in the procedure were tested on Thursday, during a series of maneuvers that successfully brought the 14-foot-long, 12-foot-wide, gumdrop-shaped capsule within 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) of the $100 billion space station.

Today, a far more ambitious set of maneuvers brought the Dragon all the way to the station ? but the trip wasn't always easy.

Fixing the glitches
The craft started out by taking up a position 250 meters (820 feet) below the station. From that vantage point, the Dragon was put through a series of maneuvers to test the station-to-spacecraft communication system. The space station's astronauts had the Dragon approach, then retreat, then approach, then hold its position.

After assessing the data, NASA said it wanted to do a double-check on the Dragon's thermal imagers, which are part of the rendezvous sensor system. The spacecraft was commanded to approach to a distance of 200 meters (656 feet), then stop while NASA took stock again. Space agency spokesman Josh Byerly said SpaceX's team made "minor modifications" to the thermal imaging system, just to make sure that it was providing tracking data in line with what other instruments were showing.

The Dragon was on its way to a 30-meter (98-foot) checkpoint when the team at SpaceX's Mission Control in Hawthorne, Calif., ordered the spacecraft to retreat to a distance of 70 meters (230 feet). NASA's Mission Control said the SpaceX team wanted to correct bad laser sensor readings that the Dragon was getting from a stray reflector on the station's Japanese-built Kibo laboratory.?To work around the problem, SpaceX narrowed the field of view for the laser sensor so that it wouldn't pick up light from the offending reflector.

"One of the lasers wasn't working well, so we had to recalibrate the laser and tighten the beam, and then it did work," Musk explained afterward.

Catching a Dragon by the tail
Once the fix was made, Dragon returned to the 30-meter checkpoint and moved in for the final approach.?When the craft reached a distance of 10 meters (33 feet), NASA astronaut Don Pettit used the station's 17-meter-long (60-foot-long) robotic arm to grab hold of the Dragon's grapple attachment at 9:56 a.m. ET.

"It looks like we've got us a Dragon by the tail," Pettit told NASA's Mission Control.

"?Congratulations on a wonderful capture," Mission Control's Megan Behnken replied. "?You've made a lot of folks happy down here, over in Hawthorne and right here in Houston."?

Pettit joked that the operation went so smoothly it felt like a computer simulation.?"This sim went really well," he said. "We're ready to turn it around and do it for real."?

It took another couple of hours to pull in the Dragon and get it fully hooked up to the station's Harmony module. NASA and SpaceX refer to this operation as a "berthing" rather than a "docking," because the Dragon is being passively pulled in rather than powering itself into the docking port.

The completion of berthing at 12:02 p.m. ET put SpaceX in the company of four governmental space ventures?? NASA, the Russian Federal Space Agency, the European Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency ? that have built vehicles capable of hooking up with the space station.

Musk said that he'd probably have to relax SpaceX's rule against drinking alcohol at its Hawthorne headquarters to accommodate a champagne celebration, but it was clear that the hundreds of employees who gathered to watch the berthing were already on a natural high. They cheered for Musk as he spoke to reporters over a video link???and when he told them, "I love you guys, too," they broke into a chant of "E-lon, E-lon, E-lon!"?

Unloading the cargo
Dragon's hatch is scheduled to be opened early Saturday morning. The station's six astronauts will unload about 1,000 pounds (460 kilograms) of cargo, including food, clothes, batteries and a laptop, plus 15 student-designed experiments. Then about 1,455 pounds (660 kilograms) of Earth-bound cargo?? including personal items from the crew as well as completed experiments and old equipment?? will be loaded up on the Dragon. These payloads don't come anywhere close to the Dragon's capacity (6 tons going up, 3 tons coming down), but they were made part of the mission as non-essential ride-alongs.

On May 31, the capsule will be detached from the station and sent back down toward a Pacific Ocean splashdown and recovery off the coast of Southern California. That part of the operation went off successfully during Dragon's first orbital test mission in December 2010, but this would mark the first-ever return of a commercial spacecraft from the space station. Russia's Soyuz capsule is the only other existing space vehicle capable of returning space station payloads.

A fully successful mission would open the way for commercial space station resupply missions to begin in earnest. SpaceX already has a $1.6 billion contract with NASA for 12 Dragon shipments through 2016. If all goes well, the first flight covered by that contract could lift off in September, said Mike Suffredini, NASA's space station program manager. Another company, Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp., is developing a cargo spacecraft known as Cygnus to take on space station shipments as well, under the terms of a $1.9 billion contract. The Cygnus has yet to be flight-tested, however.

In addition to the cargo contract, SpaceX is one of four companies that is receiving millions of dollars from NASA to produce spaceships capable of carrying astronauts. In SpaceX's case, the Dragon would be modified with a launch escape system, while the other companies ? Blue Origin, the Boeing Co. and Sierra Nevada Corp.?? are working on other spaceship concepts, ranging from capsules to Sierra Nevada's mini-space plane. The first astronaut flights could take place as early as 2017.

Until that time, NASA will have to depend on the Russians to transport U.S. astronauts on Soyuz spacecraft, at a cost of more than $60 million a seat. SpaceX and other players in the commercial space race say they can meet or beat that price.

The transition to commercial operations for orbital transport is a key part of the Obama administration's plan for future space exploration.

"We?re handing off to the private sector our transportation to the International Space Station so that NASA can focus on what we do best ? exploring even deeper into our solar system, with missions to an asteroid and Mars on the horizon," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said after the Dragon's launch. "We?re committed to ending the outsourcing of work on America?s space program and bringing these jobs back to the United States."?

ASUS Zenbook Prime UX21A preview

Image

It was only a matter of time before ASUS refreshed its line of Ultrabooks with Intel's new Ivy Bridge chips, but the truth is, the company needed to improve a little more than just the CPU model number. If you recall, the Zenbook UX31 ushered in a modern metal design and unbeatable speed, but our enthusiasm waned after spending a week with the flat keyboard and temperamental touchpad.

Well, friends, it looks like Chairman Jonney Shih and co. were listening: the outfit is about to bring four of its leaked Zenbook Prime laptops to the US. These include the 11-inch UX21A, which you see up there, along with the 13-inch UX31A, UX32A and the UX32VD -- essentially, the UX31A with discrete graphics. Though different configurations are bound to vary, they all bring retooled, backlit keyboards, refined trackpads and, of course, Intel's third-generation Core processors. And while the lower-end UX32A is stuck with 1366 x 768 resolution, every other model -- yes, even the tiny UX21A -- will be offered with a 1080p IPS display.

In general, ASUS isn't ready to talk availability for these four models, and has not given any indication as to how much the UX21A will cost (it did reveal tentative prices for the other three). So these aren't shipping products you can buy just yet, but luckily for us, we got the chance to spend a few days with the UX21A. While we're holding off on calling this a review -- we need a price and final, production-quality unit for that -- we're good and ready to share our early thoughts. So what are you waiting for? Meet us past the break where photos, benchmark scores and detailed impressions lie in waiting.

What You Should Look For When Tax Lien Investing | FINANCE ...

Any trader who plans on tax lien investing must comprehend some fundamental facts as well as know what to watch for. This type of expenditure could be very gratifying, but also very risky. For several shareholders tax liens represent a distinctive chance to come out ahead, whether the final result is a good return or perhaps a property purchased at far lower than the market value. There are a few common errors as well as traps which could wind up costing an investor dearly, and avoiding these are vital.

The very first blunder that is commonly made by a lot of investors is to judge a property based only on photos, photographs, as well as explanations. This technique won?t enable the investor to accurately figure out how much a property is worth, or whether any structures are in solid condition. A personal inspection of the property by the trader may prevent a lot of errors, and assist determine the true worth of the exact property.

Another frequent mistake, specifically by beginners with tax lien investment, is failing to use due diligence and do the required research. Tax liens are priority liens, but there are many kinds of liens which may make a tax lien secondary to other debts. When the IRS has placed a lien towards the property then this will be resolved first and foremost, and there may not be enough left after selling the exact property to reimburse the trader.

Thorough personal bankruptcy and also title studies is important to ensure that the tax lien is valid as well as takes first priority. When the original property owner files for individual bankruptcy then the bankruptcy court can order the property sold, with the proceeds going first to lenders. In this case the investor may get little or even nothing and be out the money initially spent to get the tax lien. Title study will assure that the title is legitimate and could be moved without any problems when the tax lien isn?t fulfilled.

A lot of shareholders have made a terrific profit with tax lien investment, as well as others have acquired homes for really low prices by doing this. This kind of expenditure isn?t good for everybody though, and the risks must be cautiously evaluated to minimize any risks and have the best feasible results.

The common tax lien investor mistakes listed are just a few that may happen, as well as learning everything feasible about a property before bidding is the best method to use.

Forensic policemen collect evidence at the site of a suicide bomb attack at a parade square in Sanaa, Yemen, that killed at least 96 soldiers in one of the deadliest attacks in the city in years, Monday, May 21, 2012. The bombing appeared to be a failed assassination attempt against the Minister of Defense, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Nasser Ahmed, who arrived at the heavily secured city square to greet the assembled troops just minutes before the blast ripped through the area. (AP Photo/Hani Mohammed)

(AP) ? Grieving Yemenis held somber ceremonies Tuesday to mark the country's National Day following a suicide bombing a day earlier that killed nearly 100 soldiers and deeply shook the faith of many people in the nation's future.

Months of mass protests pushed longtime authoritarian ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh from power early this year, fueling hopes that the Arab world's poorest country could finally get on track. But Monday's blast during a rehearsal for a military parade that left scenes of carnage in the capital made clear to many in Yemen just how daunting the challenges facing the country are.

"No holidays, no revolutions and no state. Nothing. Everything is over," said teacher Assiya Thabit at Sanaa's Change Square, which was the heart of the anti-Saleh uprising. "We are following in the footsteps of Somalia and Afghanistan."

Deeply shocked by the bloodshed, some Yemenis lashed out at Saleh, suspecting that his associates had a hand in the violence.

"Saleh has destroyed everything in our souls and minds," said Ahmed Rakin, a 25-year-old protester. "What happened is the price the nation pays for Saleh's ceding power."

President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who has been in a behind-the-scenes power struggle with Saleh since taking over from him in February as part of a U.S.-backed power transfer deal, led a symbolic parade held inside Sanaa's Aviation Academy Tuesday for National Day, which marks the 1990 reunification of north and south Yemen.

Sitting behind a bulletproof glass shield, Hadi was joined by top military commanders, government officials and foreign diplomats.

Security concerns were paramount, and the parade that was originally planned for a major square in central Sanaa was scaled back and moved to the academy after Monday's attack, when a Yemeni soldier detonated a bomb hidden in his uniform during a rehearsal for a military parade.

Ninety-six soldiers were killed and at least 200 wounded in what was one of the deadliest attacks in the capital in years.

Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen claimed responsibility for the blast, saying in an emailed statement it was intended to avenge a U.S.-backed offensive against al-Qaida in a swath of southern Yemen seized by the militant movement last year.

Addressing the crowd Tuesday, the chief of staff of the Yemeni military, Maj. Gen. Ahmed Ali al-Ashwal, vowed the nation would not back down in the face of such attacks.

"We will not let terrorism destroy our future and dreams," he said.

Al-Ashwal was the only official to speak at the short ceremony. The parade was cut from three hours to one, a fly-over by fighter jets was canceled and only cadets from the police and aviation academies participated in the program.

Despite their grief, Yemenis for the first time marked the National Day without Saleh, who held power for nearly three decades before his ouster this year.

Military officials said the bomber belonged to the Central Security, a paramilitary force commanded by Saleh's nephew Yahia Saleh. He detonated his explosives in the midst of the Central Security unit as it received orders to pass in front of the parade view stand where both the defense minister and the military chief of staff were sitting.

Yemen, the ancestral homeland of Osama bin Laden, was the site of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 American sailors. There have also been a spate of assaults on the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa, including a 2008 bombing that killed 10 Yemeni guards and four civilians.

Syrian bloodshed spills into Beirut

Street battles between pro- and anti-Syrian groups in Beirut killed two people on Monday, a security official said, sparking concerns of a wider conflict in Lebanon.

The violence erupted hours after reports emerged that troops had shot dead Sheikh Ahmad Abdul Wahid, a prominent anti-Syria Sunni cleric, when his convoy failed to stop at a checkpoint in north Lebanon on Sunday. Another cleric in the car was also killed.

Washington expressed concern over the killings on Monday and urged restraint.

"We welcome the commitment of the Lebanese government and the Lebanese Armed Forces to conduct a swift and transparent investigation of the shooting incident," US State Department deputy spokesman Mark Toner said.

"And we call on all parties to exercise restraint and respect for Lebanon's security and stability," he said.

Protesters blocked roads and burned tyres in the northern region of Akkar following the killing of the clerics, and by evening the unrest had spread to the capital.

"During the night, groups of young men cut off the road in the Tareek el-Jdideh district and street battles followed," the security official said, requesting anonymity.

"Two people were killed and 18 were wounded," he said, adding machineguns had been fired and that the fighting had raged until about 3:00 am (2400 GMT).

An office housing a small pro-Syrian party in Tareek el-Jdideh, a mainly Sunni Muslim neighbourhood of west Beirut, was torched by partisans of ex-premier Saad Hariri's Future Movement and the facade of the building was riddled with bullets.

Several motorcycles and cars parked on the street below were burned.

Calm had been restored by daylight following appeals from Prime Minister Najib Mikati and other politicians.

However tension was palpable in the capital, where residents fear a repeat of sectarian clashes like those that left some 100 people dead in 2008 and brought the country close to civil war.

"I've had enough... of war," said Amal Khattab, a 40-year-old teacher and mother of two who lives in Tareek el-Jdideh.

"My children were terrified last night," she added, crying. "I can't spend another minute in this country."

Wahid's funeral was held on Monday in his hometown of El Bireh, in the northern Akkar region, where many businesses and shops were closed after Sunni religious leaders called for three days of mourning.

"We want a fair trial, and we want the killers of Sheikh Ahmad Abdul Wahid to be executed," Future Movement MP Khaled al-Daher said at the funeral.

A judicial official said military police were questioning 21 soldiers, including three officers, in relation to the death of the two clerics.

Their killing followed a week of intermittent clashes between Sunnis hostile to the Syrian regime and Alawites who support it which left 10 people dead in the northern port city of Tripoli.

Late on Monday, two rockets were fired in Tripoli, one landing in a predominantly Alawite neighbourhood and the other between Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tebbaneh, which is mainly Sunni, a security official said.

The violence has highlighted a deep split between Lebanon's political parties, where the opposition backs those leading the uprising against Assad while a ruling coalition led by Shiite militant group Hezbollah supports the Damascus regime.

The Sunni-led opposition has accused Assad of seeking to sow chaos in Lebanon in order to relieve the pressure on his embattled regime.

Reflecting mounting fears of an escalation, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates urged their citizens to avoid travel to Lebanon.

Sheikh Nabil Kaouk, a high-ranking member of Hezbollah, hit out at the opposition on Monday accusing it of transforming the north of the country into a rear base for Syrian rebels.

"The opposition has intentionally dragged Lebanon into the Syrian crisis and transformed into into a corridor and base for armed Syrians," he told a rally in the eastern city of Baalbek.

Since the outbreak of the revolt in Syria in March of last year, thousands of Syrians fleeing the unrest in their country as well as activists have sought refuge in northern Lebanon.

Syria long held sway in Lebanese politics and had troops stationed in the country for 29 years until it was forced to withdraw them in 2005 following the assassination of ex-premier Rafiq Hariri.

It has denied accusations it was involved in his killing.
