A plain blog about politics: Hypocrisy and Campaign Finance

I want to agree with Jonathan Chait, who ?is argues?there's nothing at all hypocritical about playing by the current campaign finance rules even as one attempts to change those rules in the future.

However...he (I take it) and I agree that there's nothing inherently immoral about any particular campaign finance regime, but it's not true that everyone agrees. Some people -- lots of people, many of whom write editorials for prominent newspapers -- believe that certain kinds of campaign donations are inherently corrupt and corrupting, whether or not they are legal. If you believe that, then taking such donations is presumably problematic, even if it's for the long-term goal of changing the rules and ending corruption. If, on the other hand, you simply believe that the current system is poorly designed or (unfairly) enhances the interests of some citizens at the expense of others, then there's nothing problematic at all with exploiting it while it exists. In other words, if you believe there's such a thing as legalized corruption and then participate in the activities that you've called legalized corruption, then it's fair game to ask whether you are, in fact, corrupt. I don't know whether or not Obama fits into that category; I did look back at his 2010 SOTU slam at Citizens United, and he did not talk about corruption.

Generally, I think the case made by Russ Feingold and others that Democrats have adopted a "corporate-dominated policy agenda" because of campaign finance is very, very weak. Democrats have never (regardless of the campaign finance regime, including the full presidential public financing of the 1970s) been a socialist party, and there are all sorts of understandable reasons for that having nothing to do with campaign donations. ?And if you're not going to be a socialist party, you're going to...well, I don't know whether you'll necessarily be "corporate-dominated," but you're certainly going to case about what your corporate constituents thing. Whether or not they count as "persons" or not. None of which is to say that different campaign finance regimes can't have at least marginal effects, but at least in my reading of the evidence there's a whole lot of myth surrounding this stuff.

While it's not quite relevant here, I'll put in another plug for floors, not ceilings: what I'd really like is sufficient public financing that both Republicans and Democrats could run real campaigns in all 435 House districts and for every Senate seat (and beyond that, for all state legislative seat). And above that, let them raise and spend what they want, how they want, with full and meaningful disclosure.

Cracks inside wings? Checks ordered on every A380

Morris Mac Matzen / Reuters, file

An Airbus A380 aircraft is seen in the paint shop at the Airbus facility in Finkenwerder, Germany, on Jan. 17.

By msnbc.com news services

BERLIN -- Europe's aviation watchdog called for checks Wednesday?on the entire worldwide fleet of Airbus A380 superjumbo jets for cracks on parts inside the wings.

The European Aviation Safety Agency's move to inspect all 68 A380s in service came as Qantas Airways grounded one of its planes, saying engineers had found 36 wing cracks after the aircraft encountered severe turbulence.

By signaling that the defects may be structural and widespread, the fleet-wide inspection order will refocus attention on flaws identified in flagship jets at both Airbus and Boeing.

Both aircraft makers maintain that their newest jets remain safe to fly after problems were caught at an early stage. On Tuesday, Japan Airlines said on Tuesday it no longer expects its first 787?Dreamliner from Boeing by the end of February due to a fresh manufacturing glitch. The issue involves shims, which are spacers between the 787's skin and the parts that support it.

The European Aviation Safety Agency?last month ordered checks on one-third of the A380 fleet after cracks were found in a handful of the thousands of L-shaped brackets that fix each wing's exterior to its internal ribcage-like structure.

'Long-term fix'
That order applied to the 20 planes that have flown the most. EASA spokesman Dominique Fouda said the agency on Wednesday would publish an updated directive extending the checks to the entire fleet of 68.

Fouda said that EASA is "working with Airbus on a long-term fix that should be ready by the summer."

Airbus, a unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co., declined to comment on the additional inspections.

Qantas said it discovered dozens of hairline cracks in?a jet's?wings during a maintenance inspection.

The Australian flagship carrier said the 36 small fissures posed no threat to safety

Qantas workers found the cracks, measuring less than 0.8 inches long, in the "wing rib feet" after the aircraft hit severe turbulence on a flight from London to Singapore last month. The cracks were not related to the turbulence and were linked to an Airbus manufacturing issue, the airline said in a statement.

Qantas conducted routine checks after the turbulence incident, then conducted "additional precautionary inspections" on the wings at Airbus' request, the airline said. The cracking was discovered in the precautionary inspections, Qantas said.

Qantas is working to repair the cracks and said it expects the plane to be back in the air within a week.

Qantas spokesman Tom Woodward said the cracks are the same type the airline recently found in the wing ribs of an A380 that is being repaired in Singapore following the disintegration of an engine in midflight in 2010. The 2010 engine failure was the most significant safety issue an A380 has faced since it began passenger flights in 2007, and prompted airlines to temporarily ground 20 of the planes.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

3 Engaging Writing Strategies Readers Enjoy

Published by Robertson | February 6, 2012 | | 33

There are several writing strategies that online authors use to help gain the interest of their readers. When publishing anything online you want it to make for interesting reading so that people will be more incline to view any additional works of yours in the future. There are various styles of writing that appeal to people online but there are a few that are more effective than the rest and for good reason. They all attempt to make readers more ?actively? involved in the content.

Here are 3 guidelines for writing any type of content online that will help to improve your writing so that you may more fully engage your readers.

Speak Directly to Them

One way to improve your writing and make your content more intriguing is to address the readers directly when discussing your topic. Mentioning to them that ?they know what it feels like? or ?we have all been there before? draws people deeper into your discussion of the content.

It is quite natural for somebody when they are addressed this way to immediately ?reflect? upon what it is you are referring to. When people do this it makes them feel more personally involved in what it is they are reading. You are including them into the conversation.

Offer Opinions

EVERYBODY likes to hear the opinions of others; this is quite simply human nature. Now this is not to say everybody will agree with yours but it will get their interest and possibly even a strong reaction as well. Styles of writing like this depend upon ?baiting? people with your perspectives and than they can either elect to agree or disagree. In any event they most likely will have an opinion of their own and this is what you are counting on. Writing in this fashion usually makes for interesting reading since it tends to ?provoke? a reaction good or bad.

Ask Questions/Opinions

This really tends to draw people into the ?conversation? since everybody likes to be asked their opinion. This also makes readers feel more involved since the mere act of posing a question is one of the most direct ways to address person. Questions require answers but to give an answer the question must first be heard therefore this tends to get the readers? attention.

Anyone who publishes content online is probably aware that certain writing strategies are more appealing than others to their readers. The styles of writing that tend to make for the most interesting reading all succeed at getting readers more deeply involved in the content. The 3 guidelines for writing we discussed above all serve to help improve your writing by learning to speak ?directly? to your audience as opposed to simply speaking at them. Incorporating this strategy into anything you may compose will better help to ?draw? readers more deeply into your content.

NBC broadcasts Super Bowl with pomp and promotion (AP)

NEW YORK ? Clint Eastwood's patriotic pep talk about "halftime in America" might just as well have applied to NBC.

The languishing, fourth-place network, owned by Comcast Corp., needed more than a touchdown from Sunday's Super Bowl broadcast ? that much was assured with a marquee rematch between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. No, NBC needed to kick-start its own second half.

It had little to complain about, getting an increasingly riveting game that came down to the final play, a buzzed-about halftime show with Madonna and no notable flub (except for a middle finger from singer M.I.A. that slipped past censors) that interfered with a solid, well-produced broadcast of the game.

But it will surely take more than Eli Manning's heroics to rescue NBC primetime.

The cross-promotion had an almost desperate feel, as if some NBC executive had wagered his life on the audience awareness score of the network's two biggest hopes: the reality singing competition "The Voice" (which was given the plush postgame time slot to premiere its second season) and the Steven Spielberg-produced drama "Smash" (which premieres Monday, after, naturally, another two hours of "The Voice").

"It's hard to believe this is the last Super Bowl in the pre-Smash era," tweeted Seth Meyers of NBC's "Saturday Night Live."

But in between ads for "Smash," the Patriots and Giants played a closely contested game before Manning and Tom Coughlin yet again defeated Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, as they did four years ago in Super Bowl XLII.

Since then, the television landscape has changed, as was evidenced by Sunday's broadcast. In a first, it was streamed live online on both NFL.com and NBCSports.com. The feed was a sure forerunner to more streaming sports, but was rudimentary, with variable camera angles, slight social media integration and about a 30-second delay.

On TV, the echoes of Super Bowl XLII were sometimes eerie, and play-by-play team Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth didn't miss any chance to compare the two games.

"Wow," said Collinsworth as the teams vied in the tense fourth quarter. "We should just have these teams play all the time."

Michaels, not missing a beat to promote NBC's "Sunday Night Football," added: "On Sunday night."

That both Giants wins were enabled by remarkable receptions ? earlier by David Tyree against his helmet, Sunday by Mario Manningham on the sideline ? was fittingly cited. At another moment, when Brady eluded a pass rush and then heaved an interception, Collinsworth, recalling Manning's disappearing act four years ago, said it was "like the opposite of the last Super Bowl."

In his second Super Bowl but first for NBC, Collinsworth, the former Cincinnati Bengal and longtime dispenser of no-nonsense, offered proof that he's the best color man in the business. He was most at home in the biggest moments, when commentators are most needed.

Before the thrilling final drives, the game at times seemed oddly lacking mojo. Was it the lack of Tebowing? The missing cutaways to Peyton Manning?

The broadcast was led by NBC's "Sunday Night Football" crew and overseen by producer Fred Gaudelli and director Drew Esocoff. An audience anticipated to top 100 million (last year's drew a record 111 million average viewers) helped NBC sell $250 million in advertising, with 30-second commercials going for as much as $3.5 million.

With such high stakes, NBC spared no expense, following the action with some 40 cameras. The usual, bloated six-hour-long pregame show preceded the game, anchored by Bob Costas and Dan Patrick.

Though there was plenty of the usual hype that accompanies the Super Bowl, NBC's broadcast benefitted from its stable of respected personalities, all of whom are generally pomp-resistant. Costas and Patrick keep perspective tempered in their own way: Costas, earnestly journalistic; Patrick, sardonically skeptical.

Their presences were needed in the pregame, an annual bit of programming excess that does little more than give Super Bowl parties a background image and supply TV critics with something to bemoan.

Costas earned the Nostradamus award for his interview with Brady, in which he asked the quarterback if he'd rather be up with a few minutes to go and be in the sideline, or be down with the ball. Brady answered the latter, but after seeing his Hail Mary fall the ground, he might want to reconsider.

While NBC kept the festivities closer to the game than some, it still offered the cringe-inducing "Super Suite" red carpet show. Singer and actor Nick Cannon awkwardly and superficially interviewed celebrities such as Adam Sandler and Katharine McPhee, the star of "Smash." McPhee hit a low point by trying to force a comparison of her character to a young Brady.

Few of NBC's stars didn't make cameos of some kind, from Brian Williams to "30 Rock" sketches. NBC also hyped its new NBC Sports Network, as well as its coming coverage of the 2012 Olympics in London.

Sometimes, the feature profiles felt very much like an NBC Olympics broadcast.

One highlight was Peter King's heart-rending report on former New Orleans Saint Steve Gleason, who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Thankfully, King didn't shy away from considering the link between brain disease and football, a topic that didn't come up in the game broadcast.

Pittsburgh Steeler Hines Ward and Green Bay Packer Aaron Rodgers joined regular NBC analysts Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison, but it was the former Patriot, Harrison, who stood out. Harrison is an odd combination of candid and cocky that improves on often too-soft studio vibe.

The nearing of the game (finally!) was also matched by a deeper dive into commercialism as the primetime ads geared up. Aside from the normal animal tricks and male chauvinism, the spots struck a tone of recession-minded nostalgia.

Budweiser reflected on the end of prohibition, General Electric touted its old-fashioned manufacturing with its "G.E. works" campaign, and even "Star Wars" returned in a Volkswagen ad and a trailer for a new 3-D release. When Eastwood gravely intoned about America's second half for Chrysler, some wondered if he was hocking cars or running for president.

There were touches of reminiscing, too, in the seemingly lip-synced halftime performance of Madonna, pop royalty at 53.

It was during moments like those that it was clear that no number of NBC commentators could match those on Twitter. The social media stream of real-time conversation is now as much a part of Super Sunday as nachos and chicken wings.

Spielberg's The River hits UK iTunes 24-hours after US TV debut, will it curb piracy of the show? (Digital Trends)

The River ABC PosterPiracy has been in the news a lot recently, thanks to extensive coverage of both the SOPA and PIPA bills, and the ongoing saga of Megaupload.com.

Neither unpopular bills or the closing down of services also used for legitimate means are the solution to the problem though, so what is? While a complete solution may not even exist, there are steps that can be taken to cut down on the effects of piracy, provided someone is willing to put in the work.

While many automatically think piracy means films, television shows are just as popular, especially those US series that take an age to make it out of the country. Take Dexter for example. Season six has finished its first run on Showtime, but isn?t expected to play until spring 2012 in the UK. With season five recently released there on DVD, not everyone will be willing to wait.

The River

Someone at ABC has been thinking though, as it has been announced that its new show The River will be making its UK debut just 24-hours after it plays in the USA. But instead of playing on network television, it will be available for download through iTunes.

The River, a creepy drama that sounds like the oft-banned 80s gorefest Cannibal Holocaust, hasn?t been picked up by a UK network, and given its high-profile team ? Steven Spielberg and Paranormal Activity creator Oren Peli are both involved ? it would be a prime candidate for pirates.

Simultaneous release schedules are nothing new, but despite being championed by many as a way to decrease piracy, still aren?t widely employed. The last high profile TV show, also by ABC, that abandoned a staggered release was Lost, when its finale broadcast simultaneously around the world.

Pricing for The River is reasonable too, as iTunes will be charging ?2.49/$2.99 for an HD episode and ?12.99/$20.99 for an HD season pass. Considering a Blu-ray season of Dexter costs upwards of ?30 on release, this is very competitive.

A Divided Industry

There are outspoken advocates and enemies of the simultaneous release. The chief operating officer of Paramount Studios considers the system a big problem, arguing that it only makes higher quality pirated versions available sooner, while film critic Mark Kermode says it offers people the film they want, in the format they want, when they want to watch it.

Apple has recently made a bold move to try and revolutionize the text book, so how about they use their considerable influence to push studios, networks and distributors to offer more of their products across more iTunes stores at the same time. After all, it would be of financial benefit to all concerned, and ultimately, isn?t that what the piracy argument boils down to?

The River premieres on ABC on February 7 and hits iTunes February 8.

Dog-killing rumor helps Chester pets find homes | CharlotteObserver ...

A false report that a mass euthanasia of dogs and cats was planned at the Chester County (S.C.) Animal Shelter brought pet-lovers from three states to the facility Monday.

Officials said the report, largely spread through Facebook and other social media sites, was erroneous. But they say interest in the animals led to about 30 dogs being adopted.

"It kept us plenty busy," Chester County Sheriff's Capt. Mary Anne Tolbert, the shelter supervisor, said Tuesday morning. "The phone is still ringing this morning."

The report apparently began spreading over the weekend, mostly on Facebook. Several people posted messages and sent emails, saying a mass killing of dogs and cats at the shelter was planned, either for Monday or Tuesday. Some of the messages made it to Support Chester County Animal Shelter, a Facebook page organized by pet-lovers who try to find homes for dogs and cats at the shelter.

Officials with the group wrote on Facebook that the rumors were false, but that didn't stop animal-lovers from arriving at the Chester County shelter Monday.

Tolbert said about 30 dogs were adopted Monday. Animal rescue groups came from South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee to help. The shelter's phone remained busy Tuesday morning.

Tolbert said the shelter was overcrowded, with about 100 dogs and cats at the facility over the weekend. Capacity is 65, she said.

She said the attention has helped dozens of pets find homes, and she said the shelter "has plenty of loving dogs and cats" still looking for homes.

The Chester County Shelter is at 2714 Dawson Drive, in Chester. Shelter hours are 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 to 4:30 p.m. weekdays, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
